Johnson (2010) states, “For the Christian, the science of psychology and
the art of counseling are fundamentally religious enterprises, as is all of
life”, what this means for my area of research is to relieve the stigma of
the African Americans as it relates to the high regard for their Christian
beliefs to only trust in God Almighty and seek to severe the skepticism
that man is gifted by God to assist with mental health issues. We have our
hesitancy when it pertains the acceptance of bad news when it relates to
our health. In the African American community, most are not accepting of
the any news that contradicts what God is teaching in His word. His word
says that he is a healer, and most take that literally. In actuality, this is
true if it is in His divine will for one to be healed.
It is imperative for the science of psychology to integrate with the art of
counseling. God would not have gifted clinicians in this area had there
been a need. Since God is the giver of all life there are certain
maintenance measures needed to maintain the best mental, physical and
spiritual entities in the lives of mankind. Ultimately each of these areas
assist people in affording an in-depth description of the objectives in an
inquiry, whether the sharing of religious content occurs or specific
understandings, outlook, or opinions to justify psychologically for the
escalation of such spectacles, whether they be in separate lives. Basically,
an individual’s faith and the practitioner’s faith must be respected,
however if one does not possess faith it is completely possible for the two
that do not share a similar faith to work together successfully.
Having credence offers a sense of relief, determination and connection to
others. According to scripture sheep begat sheep. (King James Bible,
2017, Matthew 9:37-38). This scripture is indicative of Christians being
able to draw others through their interactions with them. It is very true
that in order to gain the confidence of an individual, one must first show
that they have a genuine interest in their well-being. It is very difficult to
persuade someone to want what you have if what you have is not working
for you. We are not to push the religion down the throats of people that
are not believers but to allow them to see something in us to guide their
thoughts in a way indicative of what they see in you as a believer.
Within my research, I believe that integration of the two will allow
everyone to see that even though they have different views, the ways in
which the paths cross is ultimately for the purpose of sustaining a
productive life. ;To accomplish this, the science will allow us to view the
what and the why to describing certain behaviors whereas the counseling
guide us to better choices to the was in which we act and react.
