The Consequences of Ideas is an anthology of complex ideologies and
thoughts from famous philosophers throughout time and their concepts of
God. In this book, Sproul asserts that there is almost no end to the
number of ways humanity can misunderstand reality, convolute the truth,
or contrive ways to glorify the creature rather than the Creator. As I read
through the book it became clear that many “new” ideas in Western
culture are ideas that are just built upon other previous ideas from those
who existed thousands of years ago. Sproul proves that ideas are not just
passing fads but can endure for generations to come, with wide-ranging
consequences for all humanity
Many habits and beliefs that we have inherited originate uncritically from
our family and cultural heritages, but many of our beliefs are formed
through a concerted effort to form a more thorough understanding of the
world around us, in us, and above us. “To understand the culture in which
we live in, we need to be familiar with the ideas that have shaped it”
(Sproul, 2020). I think “Ideas have Consequences” means that with any
idea that is accepted there are positive consequences and negative
consequences that may arise because of this idea. Ideas have
consequences, and by having a thorough understanding of ideas, we can
have the power to control and shape consequences. “[I]t is critical for
Christians to understand the ideas that are shaping them. The greater
their familiarity with the streams of thought that have saturated Western
culture through the ages, the greater their ability to influence this culture
for Christ.” (Sproul, 2020).
It is important to those who are in or entering the field of Psychology it is
important to remember that ideas have consequences. Without ideas, life
will become stagnant and progress won’t be made. Change only occurs
through ideas.
