The Consequences of Ideas
 Man, innately desires to understand what surrounds him, including
his culture. This has been the basic initiative for philosophical thought.
However, to understand the world around us, we need to actually
understand the ideas that shaped and continue to shape our reality as it
exists. In his book, R.C Sproul explores the chronology and intricacies of
western philosophical thought. Philosophical discourse is an attempt for
man to seek an explanation for fundamental questions about events and
phenomena and thus have a deeper understanding of reality and
being(Sproul, 2000). Ideas put forward by earlier philosophers have in a
great way shaped man’s understanding of the world and his consequent
culture.
 Ancient philosophers have already explored the bulk of modern
world philosophical dilemmas, even though from a more subtle and naïve
perspective(Sproul, 2000). Much of what the modern man struggles with
from a metaphysical perspective has already been answered by past
inquiry. The ideas put forward in the past have hugely shaped how we
think about reality to date - only with more refinement and detail. Culture,
therefore, has evolved from a place of ideas stemming from metaphysical
thought by ancient philosophers such as Augustine, Socrates, and Plato.
Culture in all its entirety, such as arts and theology, is, therefore, a
manifestation/reflection/consequence of the ideas of early thinkers.
 Thought shapes understanding which is then manifested in action
– this is the elemental nature of ideas. Beyond understanding the world
through the lens of historical-philosophical discourse, this holds true for all
thinking. The implication of deliberate and informed thought in social
advancement can therefore not be overstated. Public policy ratified within
our legislative institutions impacts the quality of life we live and the kind
of societies we create. Great ideas within policy result in development
through positive social action and vice versa.
