The African American community overlook the importance of mental
health.Research shows that African Americans are more likely to
experience mental health disparities than any other race. Research also
suggest that African American do indeed seek outside mental health
services. Previous research has demonstrated that some African
Americans ages 18-54 have had a counseling session to address their
mental health concerns. Previous data has relied on African American
receiving services. However, studies have not shown the duration of time
spent in services or its effectiveness. Studies have not shown active
church goers utilizing mental health services simultaneously. In this study,
I will use face to face interviews and surveys to gather information
regarding outside mental health service usage, duration and co-occurring
actions with attending church and therapy together. These results
suggested that African Americans are least likely to seek mental health
services outside of church. African Americans also terminate services
before their anticipated end date and return to seeking services from their
spiritual leaders in their churches.
