Results
The aa total aa sample aa collected aa for aa this study aa consisted aa of aa 35 aa individuals: aa
18 aa female aa (51.4%) aa and aa 17 aa male aa (48.6%), aa providing aa roughly even aa distribution. aa
This aa was aa a aa fortuitous aa outcome, aa since aa participation aa in aa the aa study aa was aa voluntary
and aa no aa effort aa was aa made aa to ensure aa equal aa sampling aa in aa regards aa to aa gender. aa
Other aa demographic aa parameters aa were aa not aa so aa well aa dispersed, aa with aa 62.9% aa of the
sample aa being aa married, aa 88.6% aa being aa white, aa and aa 48.5% aa falling between aa the aa
ages aa of aa 30 aa and aa 33.
aa The aa purpose aa of the aa study was aa to aa determine aa whether aa there aa is a aa
relationship aa between aa spirituality aa and quiet aa ego. aa In aa order to aa accomplish aa this, aa a
Pearson’s aa r aa Correlation aa was aa calculated aa based aa on aa participants’ aa scores aa of aa
spirituality aa and aa quiet aa ego. aa No aa relationship aa was aa found, r aa (33) aa = aa 0.168, aa p aa =
.336, aa 𝑟2 aa = aa aa .028 aa (two-tailed). aa The aa null aa hypothesis aa is aa retained; aa there aa is aa no
correlation aa between aa spirituality aa and aa quiet aa ego aa (see aa Table aa 1).

Discussion
This aa study aa set aa out to aa determine aa if aa a aa relationship aa exists aa between aa
spirituality aa and aa quiet aa ego. aa A aa survey aa was aa administered aa to aa 35 aa volunteers aa via a
Facebook aa and aa Google Forms, aa with aa the results aa ultimately aa indicating aa that aa no aa
such aa relationship aa exists. aa One aa limitation aa of the aa study aa was the aa sampling aa
method, aa with aa only aa people aa who aa owned a Facebook aa accounts aa and aa were aa friends aa
with aa the aa researcher aa able aa to aa participate. aa This aa led aa a aa few aa individuals aa to aa
question aa whether aa the researcher aa would aa be aa able aa to aa identify aa their aa data, aa which
could aa conceivably aa have aa led aa to a a aa subject aa effect despite aa reassurances aa of aa
anonymity. aa It aa is also aa possible aa that some aa of aa the aa heavily aa skewed aa demographic aa
factors aa had aa an aa impact aa on aa results, aa with white, aa married aa people aa in aa their aa early aa
thirties aa being aa disproportionately aa represented.

While aa the aa null aa hypothesis aa was aa retained, aa this aa was aa not aa an aa altogether aa
unexpected aa outcome aa based aa on aa the aa research aa examined: aa MacLeod aa et aa al. aa (2019) aa
saw aa a aa stark aa contrast aa in aa anxiety aa levels aa between aa those aa who aa considered aa
themselves aa religious aa versus aa spiritual, aa with aa spiritual aa people experiencing aa less aa
anxiety aa and aa aligning a more aa with aa quiet aa ego aa characteristics. aa While aa all aa religious aa
people aa may aa be aa spiritual, aa not aa all aa spiritual people aa are aa religious; aa this a leads aa to
difficulty aa in aa interpreting aa the aa interactions aa between aa spirituality aa and aa quiet a ego aa
without aa also aa knowing where aa participants aa score aa on aa a aa scale of aa religiosity. aa This aa
line aa of aa reasoning aa extends aa to aa the a constituent aa components aa of aa quiet aa ego, aa such aa
as aa self-compassion, aa as aa well. aa While self-compassion aa is aa part of aa quiet aa ego
(Chew aa & aa Ang, aa 2021), aa it aa is aa unclear aa if aa self-compassion aa is a a aa necessary–or aa
even aa desirable–characteristic aa of aa spirituality aa generally, aa much aa less aa consistently aa
necessary aa or aa desirable aa across aa the aa plethora aa of aa organized aa religions. aa Gratitude, aa on
the aa other aa hand, aa another aa quiet aa ego aa component, aa was found aa to reinforce aa
positive aa religious aa experiences aa in aa individuals aa and aa shield them aa from aa negative aa
religious aa experiences aa (Szcześniak aa et aa al., aa 2022). aa These aa characteristics aa represent aa a
microcosm aa of aa the issue aa with aa attempting aa to aa use spirituality aa as aa a aa variable
without aa accounting aa for aa religiosity: aa the aa two aa interact aa in ways aa that aa can aa
corroborate aa or aa contradict aa each aa other aa depending aa on the aa metric aa observed. aa
What aa spirituality aa even a means, aa or aa what aa it aa means aa to aa have aa a aa spiritual aa
awakening, aa varies aa drastically aa from aa ego-dissolution aa to aa an aa explosion aa of a energy aa
(Taylor, aa 2018). aa While aa the former aa can aa encourage aa leaders aa to aa display aa quiet aa ego aa
characteristics aa that aa improve aa job aa satisfaction aa (Buonomo aa et aa al., aa 2021), aa there a is aa

aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa 5
still aa no aa clear a research, aa as aa highlighted aa earlier, aa on aa how aa the constructs aa of aa quiet
ego aa and aa spirituality aa interact. aa It aa is aa very aa possible aa the aa results a of aa this aa study
are aa accurate aa and aa that aa quiet aa ego aa and aa spirituality aa have aa too many aa constituent a
components aa with aa conflicting aa interactions aa to aa significantly aa correlate. aa Even aa if this aa
is aa the aa case, a while aa the aa results aa of aa this aa study aa did aa not find aa a link aa between aa
quiet aa ego aa and aa spirituality, aa there aa is aa still a the aa very aa relevant aa question aa of aa how
elements aa of aa these aa constructs aa interact. aa The aa research aa hypothesis aa is both aa broad aa
and aa in aa its infancy; aa meaning aa that if aa further aa research aa can aa parse aa apart aa
spirituality aa from aa religiosity aa or look aa at aa how aa some aa of aa the aa other, unexamined aa
elements aa of aa quiet aa ego aa interact aa with aa spirituality, aa a aa future study aa could aa re-
examine aa the aa research aa question aa with aa a aa better aa understanding aa of aa its aa complexities, aa
and aa hopefully, aa a aa more aa representative aa demographic aa sample.
