Introduction
The study examines the quality of parent relationships and their influence on
adolescents’ current and future relationships. It focuses on how marital relationship quality and
parent–child relationships, as well as depressive symptoms, may affect adolescents in a
unidirectional manner.
Purpose
The study advances the extant literature on the reciprocal associations among marital
relationship quality, parent-adolescent closeness and conflict, and depressive symptoms across
adolescence.
Hypothesis
The primary hypothesis—that marital relationship quality predicts parent-adolescent
relationship quality, which in turn predicts adolescent depressive symptoms in a unidirectional
manner.
Methodology
Sample
The study sample consisted of 5,997 participants who took part in the assessment. It
included adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18, along with their parents. Families were
recruited through the Taiwan Youth Project.
Measures
The study used a longitudinal survey of 2,292 parent-adolescent dyads from the Taiwan
Youth Project. To examine the bidirectional relationships among variables, cross-lagged path
models were employed. The models tested associations between marital relationship quality,
parent-adolescent closeness and conflict, and adolescent depressive symptoms across ages 12
to

18.
Procedures
The study analyzed adolescents from the Taiwan Youth Project, specifically targeting 7th
and 9th grade students. A multistage cluster random sampling approach was used to select
participants from four regions with varying levels of urbanization in Northern Taiwan: Taipei City,
Taipei County, and Yi-Lan County.
The study included 2,292 adolescents and their parents who both completed
assessments in Wave 1. Follow-up data collection resulted in 2,171 participants in Wave 2 and
1,534 participants in Wave 3.
Results
The study revealed a hierarchical pattern of prospective associations, offering new
insights into the cultural specificity of family systems theory in non-Western families.
Specifically, higher marital relationship quality at age 12 predicted lower parent-adolescent
conflict at age 15 (B = -0.07, p < .01). Additionally, marital relationship quality directly predicted
fewer adolescent depressive symptoms from middle to late adolescence and indirectly
predicted depressive symptoms from early to late adolescence through its influence on
parentadolescent relationship quality in middle adolescence.
Practical Significance
The study is meaningful because it demonstrates how the quality of relationships can
shape adolescents’ current and future relationships. Understanding how relationships affect
adolescents can help implement better strategies to foster positive and healthy interactions
with others.
Critique
A notable strength of the study is its large sample size, which enhances the reliability and
statistical power of the findings. A limitation, however, is that the study was restricted to Taiwan

and Chinese cultural contexts, which may limit the generalizability of the results. Incorporating a
more global or culturally diverse sample could further strengthen the study and provide broader
insights into family systems theory across different populations.
Personal Application
Children are the next generation, and setting a good example for them shapes how they
will behave as adults. The quality of your relationships within your family, among friends, and in
your community can directly influence the relationships children will have as they grow.
Scripture reinforces this idea: “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will
not turn from it” (New International Bible, 2011/1978, Proverbs 22:6). By modeling the right
behavior, children are more likely to follow that path throughout their lives.
