Question 6.7. You are the administrative assistant for a division chief in a large holding company
that owns several hotels and theme parks. You and the division chief have just come from the
CEO’s office, where you were informed that the guest complaints related to housekeeping and
employee attitude are increasing. Your on-site managers have mentioned some tension among the
workers but have not considered it unusual. The CEO and your division chief instruct you to
investigate. Suggest at least three different types of research that might be appropriate in this
situation.
The first type of research that might be appropriate in this situation is the exploratory
research. "Exploratory research is initial research conducted to clarify and define the nature of a
problem" (Manerikar & Manerikar, 2014, p. 95). Exploratory research help researchers come up
with the highest caution conclusions. Being the administrative assistant and using the exploratory
research contacting the guest that made the complaints to hear what took place for them to make
the complaint. As an administrative assistant listening to what happened that lead to the
complaint and trying to solve the problem behind the complaint is apart of the job description
and the exploratory research method. Also, this allows the guest to help identify which
housekeepers and which employees were the complaint referring to. Once knowing who the
particular housekeepers and employees are a meeting with each one individually will be called to
order to figure out why there were complaints on them. This will give them the opportunity, to be
honest about the situation that took place between them and the guest. After hearing their side of
the story inform them that the company does not tolerate such behavior and if there is another
complaint against them in any kind then they will no longer be employed with the company.
Another type of research that might be appropriate in this situation is descriptive
research. Descriptive research is a research method that portrays the population qualities or the
case that is being studied. "This research is more concerned with what rather than how or why
something has happened" (Nassaji, 2015, p. 129). By being the administrative assistant and
making use of the descriptive research talking with the housekeepers and the employees to figure
out what happens on the day that the complaint occurred. Listen to the housekeepers and
employees as to what happens for them to get a complaint and hope that they are truly honest
about it. Inform them that the company does not want the situation ever to occur again while they
are employed with them. Also, inform them that someone will be watching to make sure they are
doing what they are supposed to be doing.
The final type of research that might be appropriate in this situation is applied research.
Applied research is a research method that is used to solve problems that occurred immediately.
This research method is used to address a particular issue. According to the King James Version
of the Bible, Matthew 7:7 states "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock,
and it shall be opened unto you." Using the applied research method while being an
administrative assistant after figuring out what the problem is there a few solutions that can take
place. One way to solve the problem of the guest complaints is to give the guest two free nights
accommodations and passes to the theme park. Another way to solve the problem of the guest
complaints is to inform the employees and housekeepers that the company no longer employed
them due to the complaints. As an administrative assistant, the job requires to make sure the
guest is delighted with the company products and services so they can share their events with
others.
