HOMEWORK: SPSS FUNDAMENTALS TEMPLATE
This assignment is worth a total of 60 points.
•Content: point values vary but are indicated in the template and total 45 points.
•Format: point values vary but are indicated in the template for 10 pts. The remaining 5
pts are for placing answers in the correctly designated spots within the template in a
clear and easy to read format (e.g., all fit within the visible screen on the page);
demonstrating competency in written expression/grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
and uploading the template in an approved format (word or PDF). Thus, the maximum is
15 points for format.
A researcher is interested in how much students value academic honesty. Here is the
fivequestion scale she used to measure the value of academic honesty.
On a Likert scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating strongly agree, how much do you agree that:
__5__ Academic honesty is essential to a good education.
__1__ Talking about academic honesty is a waste of class time.
__1___ Cheating is sometimes necessary for academic success.
__1___ I would think less of a friend if I found out that he or she cheated on an assignment.
__5__ Honesty and integrity in my academic work are strong values for me.
She collected data from 12 people; here is a summary of the data:
V of Academic Honesty: Question #s and Answe

1 19 Male 5 2 1 4 4
2 50 Female 4 2 1 4 4
3 20 Female 3 3 4 3 1
4 18 Male 4 2 1 3 5

1. Is this research design best described as descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, or
experimental? Why? 3 pts content
PSYC 510
This research is a descriptive correlational as the researcher, measured natural occurring responses
within the surveyed items without manupilating any variables or assinigng the participants to any
conditions. The goal is to describe and assess relationships among variables, not to establish causation.
2. What is the variable of interest? What is its scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal,
interval, or ratio)? 3 pts content
The value of academic honesty is the primary variable of interest. This is measured through the five-item
likert-type scale. Likert-type items is a yield ordered categories with equal assumed spacing, the summed
scsle is treatd as interval-level measurement in the physcological reseach.
3. Enter the data exactly as shown in the table above using SPSS, using the variable names
provided in the column immediately above the data. All variables should be numeric, so
be sure to code sex as a number (you can choose the numbers). 15 pts content / 3 pts
format Recode academic honesty questions #2 and 3 so that a score of 1 = 5, 2 = 4, 3 =
3, 4 = 2, and 5 = 1. **Once you recode, rename the variables “AH2R” and “AH3R”.
•Sum academic honesty (make sure you use the RECODED values and not the
original ones for AH2 and AH3!) and name it “AH_Sum”
•Take a screenshot or “snip” of your DATA VIEW and paste it into the area provided
below. It should be an image that is completely viewable in its entirety in the
window provided.
o1 pt per column correctly entered for: ID, Age, Sex, AH1, AH4, and AH5 o
3 pts per AH2R, AH3R, and AH_Sum columns
o3 pts FORMAT for having image with all information visible within the
template margins
4. In Variable View, enter value labels for sex so that it is clear what number represents Male
and Females, respectively. Make sure the “Measure” (nominal, ordinal, or scale) for each
row is correct. Take a screenshot or “snip” of your VARIABLE VIEW and paste it into the
area provided below. It should be an image that is completely viewable in its entirety in
the window provided. (7 pts content / 3 pts format total)
•2 pts for correct variable names and all “type” being set to numeric
•2 pts for value labels entered for Sex
•3 pts for correct information in the “Measure” column
•3 pts FORMAT for having image with all information visible within the template
margins

5. Check the reliability of the scale by calculating Cronbach’s alpha. Remember to use the
RECODED variables. Copy the relevant Cronbach’s alpha SPSS output in the answer space
below. (3 pts content / 2 pt image format)
PSYC 510
6. Report the alpha () and interpret it using a complete sentence in APA format in the space
below (round to 2 decimal places). (4 pts content / 2 pts format)
The alpha coefficient for the academic honesty scale is 0.736, demonstrating strong internal
consistency and reliability. This suggests that the items on the scale effectively assess the
construct of academic honesty, and that the overall instrument exhibits dependable
measurement properties.
7. Briefly describe how you could conduct a conceptual replication of this study. Clearly
state how your proposal differs from a literal replication. Make sure your answer is
specific to the scenario and not a generic or broad definition (this is an application
question). (4 pts content)
A conceptual replication of this research would apply the original theoretical framework and
research questions while employing an alternative methodology or targeting a distinct
population. For instance, the study could be administered to another group of college students
or utilize a different instrument to assess academic honesty. In contrast, a literal replication
would entail adopting the same procedures and measures as those used in the initial
investigation.

8. List two types of construct validity covered in this week’s readings. For construct validity
listed, provide one question you could ask to assess it specific to this scenario (not a
broad or generic question – must state / include the variable of interest).
3 pts per validity = 6 pts content
Two forms of construct validity applicable to evaluating the measurement of academic honesty
include content validity and criterion-related validity. Content validity assesses whether the
instrument comprehensively encompasses all facets of the academic honesty construct.
Criterionrelated validity examines the extent to which the measure correlates with other
established indicators of academic honesty, such as self-reported behaviors or academic
performance.
