Interview Questions
Question to the Teacher
Has Justin’s challenge to focus on class tasks and tendency to be absent-minded existed
for the last six months? The reason for asking this question is to assess whether the student’s
inattention is underlain by Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). According to the
American Psychiatric Association (2022), ADHD diagnosis in children requires that the
presenting inattention has existed for at least six months.
Question to the Parent
For how long has Justin been reluctant to go to school? The reason for asking this
question is to assess whether Justin's dislike or avoidance of school has existed long enough to
point to an ADHD diagnosis. APA (2022) maintained that a dislike or avoidance of tasks that call
for committed mental effort, like school activities, points to ADHD if the dislike has existed for
at least six months. Thus, this question would have the parent highlight how long their child has
manifested the behavior. This will guide the diagnostic judgment to be made.
Question to the Parent
Does Justin present with difficulties completing home chores even when no observable
distractions are present? This question was asked to know whether Justin’s inattention occurs in
more than just one setting (school). Based on APA (2022), ADHD diagnosis is given when
