Reflection on God’s Works and The Glory of God Assignment
The link between psychology and Christianity, as Entwistle contends, is one of both
inherent tension and potential harmony. According to Entwistle, theological reflection is
concerned with God’s workings in the world whereas psychological reflection deals with the
workings of God’s world (Entwistle, 2021). This distinction demonstrates a key difference in
what the two fields concentrate on, with considerable implications for their interaction and
integration.
Theological Reflection
Theological reflection mainly deals with understanding the intentions, actions, and
purposes of God in the world. It entails understanding and interpreting scripture, understanding
divine will, and envisaging spiritual truths (Plantinga et al., 2022). The main aim of theology is
to offer an understanding of how God interrelates with the universe and humanity, stressing
morality, faith, and the eventual meaning of life. Christians consider theological reflection as
deeply embedded in the belief in divine revelation, in which the will of God is understood trough
sacred texts, teachings of Christ, and religious experiences.
Psychological Reflection
Psychological reflection, as opposed to theological reflection, is concerned with the
workings of the cosmos, specifically mental processes and behavior. Psychology depends on
empirical methods to comprehend phenomena like social interactions, cognition, development,
and emotion (DeSteno, 2021). It aims to unearth the mechanisms and principles that guide
human behavior and thought, often stressing evidence-based conclusions, observation, and
experimentation. Additionally, psychology seeks to describe, explain, envisage, and change
behavior through scientific inquiry.

Implications for Integration
The different focus of psychology and theology indicate both opportunities and challenges
for their integration. The two disciplines can enrich each other when approached with
willingness to dialogue. To begin with, the different focuses of psychology and theology can be
viewed as complementary and not contradictory (Entwistle, 2021). Psychology allows for an
understanding of human behavior and functioning while theology offers a background for
understanding moral values and ultimate purpose. Therefore, integrating the two perspectives
allows individuals to have a more profound understanding of the human experience. For
example, psychological information about mental health can be integrated with theological
aspects of spiritual-well-being.
Epistemological challenges also affect the integration of theology and psychology. While
theology is dependent on faith-based knowledge a well as divine revelation, psychology relies on
scientific methodologies and empirical evidence. This dissimilarity can cause conflicts,
especially when scientific findings tend to contradict religious principles (Entwistle, 2021).
Harmonizing such tensions necessitates an inclusive approach that respects and takes into
account both the spiritual aspects of theology and the empirical rigor of psychology.
Importantly, when theology and psychology undertake a constructive dialogue, both
disciplines can be enriched. For instance, theology will gain from psychological findings that
promote understanding of human nature, mental health, and relationships (Entwistle, 2021). On
the other hand, psychology can benefit from theological aspects like love and forgiveness, which
can enrich therapeutic practices and foster holistic well-being.
Overall, Entwistle’s remark about the different focus of psychological and theological
reflection underscore the complexity of assimilating the two fields. While psychological

reflection is concerned with the empirical study of human behavior in God’s creation, theological
reflection stresses understanding God’s intentions and actions. Integrating these viewpoints can
provide a more profound and richer understanding of human experience, even if they have
different methodologies.
