Topic: Dual-Store Model of Memory
Question/Prompt: Discuss all 3 components of the Dual-
Store Model of Memory. Give an example of the
development of a piece of information through all 3
structures of your memory according to the Dual-Store
Model. At each stage, give the verbal or visual stimulus
and the cognitive processing for transferring information
between stages. Include clear biblical principles in your
response.
The three components of Dual-Store Model of Memory include the sensory register, working
(short-term memory) and long-term memory. The first component, the sensory register, holds
incoming information long enough for it to undergo very preliminary cognitive processing.
Ormrod (2016) Sensory register can hold information long enough for the cognitive process to
begin. For example, if someone is having a conversation and easily gets distracted and isn’t fully
present with the person who is speaking. That person has heard everything the person speaking
said and probably has recorded that in their sensory register but will only remember the last few
words they heard orbits and parts of what the person was saying. The sensory register can obtain
a lot of information, store the information until it’s encoded and keeps the information for a short
period of time. There main three characteristics of the sensory register are capacity, forms of
storage and duration. The second Component, Working memory a.k.a. short-term memory.
According to the text, working memory is the component of memory in which active thinking
occurs. You might think of it as the “awareness” or “consciousness” of the memory system (e.g.,
Paller, Voss, & Westerberg, 2009; Reznick, 2007; D. J. Siegel, 2012). The short-term memory is
like the “brains post-it” the brain needs to hold the note and store it for a short period of time
before it gets processed. The third component is the long-term memory. The long-term memory
is combining both the working memory new information with information that is already
existing. There is a dual operation happening in the memory process when long-term memory
process is occurring. According to the text, Long-term memory is probably the most complex
component of the human memory system. Ormrod (2016) For example, in order for the brain to
store something into the long term memory bank it needs to first combine it with previous
knowledge that was acquired. To better help the process of long term memory and retaining
information repetition is key or even giving information meaning can help long-term memory be
stored. John 14:26 – “But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send
in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever
I have said unto you.”
Even in scripture, there is a process in which the Holy Spirit will guide us and the father will
help bring these things to our memory.
