SPSS HOMEWORK: ONE-SAMPLE T TEST AND CUMULATIVE QUESTIONS TEMPLATE
Problem Sets 1 and 2: The One-sample t test
Problem Set 1: Research Scenario: An industrial-organizational psychologist wants to measure
the effect of the Covid pandemic on the life satisfaction of nurses actively working during the
pandemic. She administers the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1985) to thirteen
nurses during the pandemic. The population mean for nurses is m = 23.6. Using the sample data
in the table below, set up your data file in SPSS and conduct a one-sample t test to determine
whether this sample has a lower SLS score than the general population of nurses. Create a
histogram to display the distribution of the sample’s SLS scores. Remember to put your initials
within any and all variable names.

2. Write an APA-style Results section based on your analysis. Include an APA-style Results
section heading. Include your histogram as an APA-style figure, with figure number and
title. Figure formatting and a Results section template are included in the “Results
Sections for the One-Sample t Test in APA Style” presentation this week. (Results section
= 8 pts; Graph = 5 pts)
A one-sample t test was conducted to determine whether nurses working during the
COVID-19 pandemic reported lower life satisfaction compared to the population mean (P =
23.6). The sample mean (M = 19.92, SD = 5.55) was significantly lower than the population
mean, t(12) = –2.39, p = .017, one-tailed. These results suggest that nurses working during the
pandemic experienced significantly lower life satisfaction than nurses in the general population.

Problem Set 2: Research Scenario: A neuropsychologist who works with clients over 60 years of
age gives 16 clients a questionnaire that measures the severity of dementia symptoms. On this
measure, scores range from 1-20. Lower scores indicate a lack of, or low severity of, dementia
symptoms; while higher scores indicate more severe dementia symptoms. The mean in the
general population of healthy adults is 5. Using the data in the table below, set up your data file
in SPSS and conduct a one-sample t test to determine whether this sample has higher scores
than the general population. Create a histogram to display the distribution of the sample’s
scores. Remember to put your initials within any and all variable names.

A one-sample t test was conducted to determine whether the mean dementia severity score
for clients over 60 years of age was higher than the population mean of 5 (M = 5.00). The
sample mean (M = 7.63, SD = 3.12) was significantly higher than the population mean, t(15) =
3.42, p = .004. These results suggest that older adults in this sample exhibited significantly
greater dementia symptom severity than the general population.

Problem Set 3: The BDI (Beck et al., 1961) is an instrument widely used to assess levels of
depression in individuals in a variety of settings. The scores range from 0–63 (whole numbers
only). A researcher administers the BDI to a sample of college students who are at risk for
depression and have volunteered for the study. The results appear in the table below. Enter the
data in a new SPSS file. They are entered as 2 columns here to save space (i.e., you will not need
2 columns in the SPSS file). Remember to put your initials within any and all variable names.

3. Which measure of central tendency would you use to describe this data set? Support
your answer with information from course materials (presentation and/or reading). (5
pts) The median score of 7.50
4. The researcher wants to refer students who meet the criteria for “severe depression” to
counseling. On the BDI, scores from 31 to 40 indicate severe depression. Based on the
data above, should the researcher refer any students to counseling? Which ones? (5 pts)

Problem Set 4: A social psychologist wants to examine the distribution of different religions in
the US. He compiles the chart below. (The data here are based on real 2020 data taken from the
web site of the Public Religion Research Institute.)
Enter the data in a new SPSS file. When creating the Religion variable, be sure that the type is
set to “String” in the Variable View so that the names will show up on the graph. Remember to
put your initials within any and all variable names.

shows the percentages for each religion. Paste the bar chart here: (5 pts)
2. What level of measurement (nominal/ordinal/scale) is the variable “Percent of US
Population”, and why? (5 pts) The “Percent of US Population” variable is numeric and

Problem Set 5: The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, version 5 (WISC-V) produces a
score called the Full-scale IQ (FSIQ) (Wechsler, 2014). The population mean for children
considered “gifted” is m = 136. A school psychologist administers the WISC-V to 18 fourthgrade
students being considered for advanced classes. The results appear in the table below. They are
entered as 2 columns here to save space (i.e., enter them in 1 column in your SPSS file).
