Understanding the Relationship between Openness to Experience and Openness to
Diversity
The personality concept has often been studied, and one of the widely accepted models is
the Big Five Personality Traits proposed by Costa and McCrae.+This model comprises five broad
dimensions that include openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness,
and neuroticism (Costa & McCrae, 2014).+The theory holds that among these elements, openness
to experience is significant in revealing an individual's openness to diversity (Han & Pistole,
2017). Nonetheless, the disposition of Openness to Experience, a particularly outstanding
dimension of the Big Five personality model, serves as a decisive factor together with the
corresponding principles of the Fruit of the Spirit in shaping individuals' predispositions towards
diversity, simply because it brings into their lives intellectual appreciation, curiosity, and
readiness to scrutinize their views which are anchored on biblical teachings.
Openness to Experience and Openness to Diversity
Han and Pistole (2017) conducted a study to measure the connection between the Big
Five personality factors and openness toward diversity, indicting the UDO or the Universal-
Diverse Orientation scale.+Through that conclusion, these researchers maintained that Openness
to Experience was the personality trait undergoing differentiation and in-depth integration.+For
instance, individuals with open, flexible-mindedness demonstrated intellectually enriched
appreciation of the cultural variables, heightened curiosity towards different perspectives, and
were willing to reevaluate their values and beliefs.
Openness to the Experience of Aesthetics, Actions, Ideas, and Values greatly relieves a
Community's open attitude toward diversity (Han & Pistole, 2017).+People with a high score of

these traits were more likely to work creatively, experience a new world, and share their thoughts
with different cultural backgrounds.
Biblical Integration
The Fruit of the Spirit outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, such as love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, will help one to develop a
welcoming and accepting stance towards the differences between people (Nelson, 1982).+Having
this character, people can have compassion, empathy, and understanding while coping with
differences.+Love respects everybody irrespective of personality, while joy and peace strengthen
dialogue and tolerance—forbearance and goodness foster tolerant dialogues, even about different
life choices.+Goodness and faithfulness uphold the basic principles of fairness and integrity
regardless of the specific culture or background.+Kindness leads to humility and non-judgment,
and self-control allows us to put emotions in check, stopping quarrels from arising.+Embracing
these principles causes a sense of a mindset of diversity, attaching it to others and expressing the
nature of God as inclusive and loving.
Personal Application
As a follower of Christ, cultivating an open and inclusive mindset toward diversity is
essential for personal growth and building a community that reflects God's love for all people.
By embracing the facets of Openness to Experience, such as intellectual curiosity, appreciation
for diverse perspectives, and a willingness to reevaluate personal beliefs, we can deepen our
understanding of others and foster meaningful connections across cultural boundaries. Moreover,
by embodying the fruit of the Spirit, we can approach diversity with love, patience, kindness, and
gentleness, creating an environment where differences are celebrated and valued. This attitude
enriches our lives and is a powerful testimony to the transformative power of Christ's love.

Conclusion
Openness to Experience is one of the five personality dimensions that develop an
individual with a welcoming perspective toward diversity.+Han and Pistole's (2017) work shows
that, among other elements, Openness to Experience is specific in how it drives open-
mindedness in intellectual curiosity, appreciation for diverse viewpoints, and tolerance for
reevaluation of one's opinions.+Nonetheless, the biblical principles in Galatians 5:22-23 of unity,
love, and the fruit of the Spirit serve as an excellent framework for accepting diversity and
creating cordial relationships across cultures.
