Quantitative Research Methodology
What is quantitative research and when would it be appropriate for you to use it? In what
type of setting is this approach even applied? This essay hopefully will shed light to these
questions as well as where to find these answers for yourself.
Quantitative research is data that is based primarily on numerical analysis.
Quantitative research is based on original empirical data. This is commonly
used in the behavioral and social sciences and related fields in which the
observed outcomes are numerically represented (APA,2020, pg.4 1.14;4 1.1).
According to the APA manual, the process of research is as follows:
introduction, method, results, and discussion. These all rely on the numerical
properties of the measurement system. Psychologists use a variety of
research techniques and in-depth data analysis to examine difficult real-
world problems and validate ideas. Developing research methods and tactics
is a specialty of quantitative psychologists, who examine a wide range of
subjects including linguistic cognition, human behavior, early development,
and memory. In addition to conducting research, these experts improve the
instruments used in psychology subfields. Numerous domains, including
government, industry, education evaluation, and research institutions, are in
guest of quantitative psychologists possessing the proficiency to manage
state-of-the-art research techniques.
Examples of quantitative research methods include descriptive
research design. This is a study that aims to clarify and illuminate the
characteristics of a certain population or phenomena. Through the use of
3
experimants, observations, and surveys to collect data, researchers are able
to identify patterns and trends in the information.
Survey research is another method. This entails a structured
questionnaire or survey used to collect data from a group of participants. It is
then the data is examined to find trends, opinions, convictions, and
behaviors within a certain community. Marketing studies, public opinions,
polls, and other social science investigations frequently use this kind of
study.
Correlational research design is another techniqe used in quantitative
research. This involves studying the link between two or more variables to
ascertain if there is a positive or negative correlation and strengths. It can
pinpoint probable predictors of a phenomena, even when it cannot establish
causality.
Advantages of quantitative research are the efficient data collected
from a larger amount of people. Relying on data ultimately helps in making
informed decisions based on reliable data instead of just solely relying on
intuition or opinion. Quantitative research provides precise measurements
and numerical data this offers a higher level of accuracy.
Disadvantages of Quantitative research methodology the lack of depth
to often focusing on gathering large amounts of data through surveys,
questionnaires, or experiments, but it may not provide in-depth insights into
the reasons or motivations behind the data. The limited flexibility of
quantitative research is another disadvantage, because it follows a
4
structured and standardized approach, which may limit the ability to explore
unexpected findings or adapt the research methods during the study.
Conclusion
Quantitative research methodologies is a useful strategy that offers
accurate measurements and numerical data for the behavioral and social
sciences to investigate and comprehend a range of events. Researchers can
discern trends, patterns, and connections between variables by using
techniques including correlational research design, survey, research, and
destructive research design. Effective data gathering from a high sample size
is made possible by quantitative research, which enables well informed
decision making based on trustworthy facts. Thought should be given to the
drawbacks such as shallow research approach and lack of flexibility before
using this methodology. According to the APA handbook (2020), quantitative
research uses numerical analysis to test hypotheses and look at real-world
issues.
