OBSERVATION ASSIGNMENT
ABSTRACT
The purpose of this observation paper to is observe a child under the age of 10 in a
natural setting for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Observations will include physical, cognitive, and
psychosocial development of the child being observed. The child being observed is my nephew,
20-month-old Barrett. Barrett is an energetic, sweet, fun-loving toddler, who is very even
tempered and has always been described as a “good baby”. Physical development is the first of
the three development types we will discuss. This will incorporate tallness, weight, muscle tone,
reflexes, and balance. Cognitive development involves knowledge, skills and problem solving.
Psychosocial development will include personality, social skills, and emotional development.
Barrett is observed in his home. His mother is a stay-at-home mom and is present and
father is at work. Their household is considered a nuclear family, with both parents and one
child living in the house. Their family is considered upper middle class, and Barrett is provided a
nourishing environment for a toddler. Barrett is familiar with me as his aunt and will conduct his
actions and behavior comparable to a normal basis while being observed.
