1. Describe (in your own words) what the textbook states about development being
lifelong. Then, reflect on how you have experienced this yourself or observed it in another
person. Include at least 5 complete sentences and cite appropriately any ideas you include from
our textbook.
From the first breath humans take, until their last development is lifelong. Throughout one’s
life development will play a big role physically, cognitively, emotionally, socially, and
spiritually. As humans grow from a baby to a toddler and continue until they are done
breathing. Humans physically change throughout life, and as we change, our minds change,
how we think, learn, remember, etc. As we get older, we tend to understand our emotions a
bit more, and our feelings towards life or things in general may change. Spiritually a human
can grow up into a religious family and as time goes on, that religion just might not align
with whatever lifestyle that person may be living at that moment. (Fisher, 2011; Sadd, et al,
2017). Physical development had a major physical, emotional, social, and cognitive impact
on me from what I can remember that caused an effect on life changes growing up for me.
Finding out at age 13 that I had Hidradenitis Suppurative a chronic, inflammatory skin
condition that causes painful lumps and boils. I had my first surgery the following year. It
was like after that life was never the same since. Spiritually it was my decision to keep
believing in my religion because I look at it as, I am strong, and I am not alone.
2. How does our textbook describe spiritual development? Based on your personal
experience and observation, do you agree that all humans are spiritual beings? Why or why
not? Include at least 5 complete sentences and cite appropriately any ideas you include from
our textbook.
Although one may be born into a religious family, it is up to that person to live out a spiritual
journey throughout their lifespan. No one is perfect but cognitive changes can have an
impact on the learning process, allowing a person to either be influenced in a negative or
positive way. I was born into a Christian family as a child I enjoy going to Sunday school, and
afterwards church service. Although cognitively, physically, and emotionally I have changed
over time, our Christianity religion had a positive impact on my life. Unfortunately, that does
not work for everyone

The Cognitive or Mental Domain examines changes in the life span in language, intelligence,
memory, perception, and more (Baltes & Goulet, 1970).

All humans have their own time frame of when developmental changes happen. For
example, growing up I had a cousin who is two years older than me, who would occasionally
wet the bed at night. We were both beyond the potty-trained age, psychologically it was
part of a learning process for her at night. As we got older mentally, she didn’t understand

why, socially she was afraid to say anything, physically she didn’t feel comfortable staying at
slumber parties. As time went on you can tell it changed how she felt and thought by the
way she expressed herself. Aa a pre-teen, I couldn’t understand why my older cousin, who
at the time I looked up to, was occasionally urinating in bed. What I do know now is that
developmental changes can have an influence on memory and our learning language which
can have an effect on a person’s learning process.
5. Identify one developmental theorist and (in your own words) briefly describe an
important concept from his theory. Based on your experience and observation, do you believe
this concept is valid? Why or why not? Include at least 5 complete sentences and cite
appropriately any ideas you include from our textbook.
Lev Vygotsky was a psychologist who believed that culture and social interactions play a big
part in human development. Vygotsky theory was that children learn more from more skilled
members of their society. I believe in this concept because, for example, my neighbor and I
were trying to teach ourselves how to ride our bikes without training wheels. No success no
matter how many times we fell off and got back on. My neighbor’s older sister who I adored
dearly, I thought she was just such a cool big sister. I’ll never forget one day Lisa took the
time out of her day and assisted her little brother and I with learning how to ride our bikes
without our training wheels. She had patience and was able to show us how to do it that day.
Sometimes having a older mentor does come alongside, to help provide support. We cannot
learn everything on our own.
6. The textbook argues that life begins at conception. Reflect on how agreement with this
statement might influence your study of developmental psychology. Please include at least 5
complete sentences and cite appropriately any ideas you include from our textbook.
The book argues that life begins with conception because it explains the beginning of life in
biological and human form. The textbook goes into detail about fertilization and two can
bring a life into the world. What amazed me was that identical twins do not have to favor
one another. I thought that only happened with fraternal twins, being that my siblings are
fraternal twins and they do not have any resemblance.
7. Describe a concept from chapters 1 or 2 in our textbook that you found particularly
surprising or interesting. Explain why you chose it and why it was surprising or interesting to
you. Please include at least 5 complete sentences and cite appropriately any ideas you include
from our textbook.
What I found surprising was that B.F. Skinner emphasized a learning theory of behavior
(Hunt pg.24). I would have thought of someone later down the line for that theory. I chose
that theory because it reminded me of how I praise my children for getting good grades and
there is some positivity. I remembered my mother doing that to me as a child and so I
carried that positive behavior with me. Children watch and learn at a young age, I have

heard parents say several times “oh their young they don’t know any better”. These
theorists have already proven to us that behaviors are a part of lifelong development in
humans.
