Prior to this course and reading the chapter, multi-tasking was something that I knew I
was never good at. I always tried to understand the people that could multi-task so easily, and
thought that maybe it was just harder for me to do because of how I am “wired” as a person.
Maybe it just wasn’t my gift, and that I should just be okay with being unable to do so. I recall
many times driving around town only to receive a phone call while at the same time listening to
the voice on the GPS directing me where to turn and when. It is at these moments where I am
spread too thin and am unable to completely focus on one thing, while consecutively executing
the other action. I believe I am not a good multi-tasker because my focus is devoted to only that
which takes priority. Every other action besides that which takes priority becomes devalued in
ranking due to this thought process.
Regarding my thoughts on multi-tasking in general, I believe that if an individual can do
so properly without neglecting the importance of another task while maintain efficiency, it is a
great skill that should be put into practice as much as possible. Multi-tasking within certain
situations such as studying, daily tasks, and work can improve one’s self as an asset. That
individual therefore becomes more productive and favorable.
On the other hand, an individual who struggles with focusing on more than one thing at
once should take great caution to attempting to multi-task. It is ultimately best to focus on one
thing and do the job or task well, then to tend to other things and end up failing in the process.
When it comes down to it, there are some things that can be multi-tasked, and other things not so
much.
Examples of situations where multi-tasking may not be favorable would be driving, one
on one conversations, or even eating. Many of these things can lead to turmoil, or ultimately
even death! Having undivided attention to situations like the ones listed above is crucial. Some
things are best left in focus. On the other hand, some situations where multi-tasking (while
maintaining efficiency) would come greatly into play would be work related tasks, and non-
verbal communication. Doing so within these aspects of life can improve reliability, and
production both in and outside of the professional field.
All in all, Multi-tasking should be taken at face value. Many people seem to manage
perfectly fine doing so, while others greatly struggle. If an induvial possess this skill (again,
while maintain efficiency), he or she should be extremely grateful and put this ideology into
practice daily. On the other hand, if an individual cannot multi-task, it is better to focus on one
thing at a time, therefore maintaining quality.
