Motivation, Value, and Purpose
Difference Is Between Intrinsic And Extrinsic Motivation.
Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are differentiated based on the source of the motivation.
People who are motivated intrinsically are fulfilled by their actions and enjoy them solely based
on the satisfaction they glean from them (Kelley, George & Piferi, 2020). If one is extrinsically
motivated, they are interested in completing a task for the reward that accompanies it. For
instance, being in school to learn while the degree and subsequent money advantage are an
afterthought can be considered a form of intrinsic motivation. If one is in school to earn a degree,
get a job, and get rich, they can be said to be extrinsically motivated. In the workplace, intrinsic
motivation comes from the satisfaction of say healing people if one is a doctor while extrinsic
motivation comes from the money that accompanies such a career and the praise. Money is
considered the greatest form of extrinsic motivation.
How Values And Purpose Might Inform One's Experience With Motivation.
The Venn diagram demonstrates an intersection of values and purpose. One's purpose
comprises their mission, passion, vocation, and profession (Kelley, George & Piferi, 2020).
These components can inform one's experience with motivation. For instance, if one's mission
and vocation are focused on offering what the world needs, that can be a source of intrinsic
motivation. For instance, if a doctor is interested in offering healthcare to a rural community. The
intersection between vocation and profession refers to something that can provide a means of
living (Kelley, George & Piferi, 2020). This can be linked to extrinsic motivation considering
people are always interested in maximizing their living. One's profession and passion intersect

and result in something that some excel at (Kelley, George & Piferi, 2020). People often take
what they excel at and maximize it to make a living. This can be a source of extrinsic and
intrinsic motivation depending on one's interests. One's passion and mission result in something
that people love to do (Kelley, George & Piferi, 2020). If one loves to do something, they are
interested in the satisfaction they glean from it, making it a source of intrinsic motivation.
What Motivates You In Your Educational Pursuits? How Do Your Values And Purpose
Impact Your Experience?
What motivates me to get out of bed in the morning and pursue this course is both
intrinsic and extrinsic. On the one hand, I am interested in growing as a person and being the best
version of myself. Education can help me achieve that. However, society has taught us to use our
education to make our lives and others better. I am interested in becoming the best version of
myself through my educational pursuits and help make the world a better place. Although that
sounds like a cliché, I believe education has the probability of opening up opportunities for
oneself and others. My values and purpose impact my experience significantly. I am interested in
pursuing interests that fit with my passion and profession. I use these criteria as a way to
influence how I choose my career and education. How can I make the world a better place? I
always ask myself how to earn a living using what I excel at, love to do, and what the world
needs. Although very few people are privileged to do what they love in life, the probability of
being one of them is a great motivator. That can be interpreted as the mindset of an
entrepreneur, but I believe one cannot be happy if they are only motivated by material things.
One's pursuit of money can be exhausted, but their interests in changing the lives of others can be
impactful and lifelong. `
