Learning is believed to be a relatively permeant change in behavior that results from
experience. Through experience, we learn about the world and develop new skills, just like
studying, by making changes in our behavior. Encoding and storing information to retrieve later
is not easy. Everyone is different and has distinct ways to process the information they receive.
Retaining crucial memory for later use is not easy. Several strategies exist that help
people study effectively and efficiently. Firstly, repeating the material. Repetition help maintains
information for a more extended time. Importantly, to consolidate information, leave some space
between study sessions when repeating the materials because new material is easily forgotten.
(George et al, 2020).
Additionally, another strategy includes observational learning. Learning through
observation and imitation is an influential teacher among humans. (George et al, 2020). Also,
make materials meaningful. Typically, people better remember more thoroughly processed
information because the information profoundly went through elaborative rehearsal. (George et
al, 2020). Furthermore, insight learning can also be a formidable way of retaining information.
Working through a problem until suddenly realizing the solution works for some people because
they learned from experience. Again, minimize interference if possible. To minimize
interference, people should avoid distractions. Ways to avoid distractions include, for example,
selecting a quiet environment to evade disturbances from friends, family, or roommates. Also,
coming up with memory aids such as flashcards helps retain information for a long time. (George
et al, 2020).
When excessive demands are placed on particular cognitive processes like attention and
memory, cognitive overload occurs. Students will need to be cautious about multitasking for the

following reasons. Cognitive overload leads to multitasking. Multitasking interferes with
performance and leads to fatigue because people's cognitive resources get stretched to their
maximum ability. Multitasking also influences the loss of time and energy due to cognitive
shifts. Repeated shifts may result in slowed processing time and increased error rates. (George et
al, 2020). On the other hand, multitasking can be beneficial because it allows us to monitor our
environment continually and shift our attention from less important to more essential stimuli and
tasks.
In conclusion, strategies such as repeating the material, observational learning, making
materials meaningful, insight learning, and minimizing interference can help for successful
studying habits and retain information for a long time. Also, students should be cautious about
multitasking because it interferes with performance, leads to fatigue, and influences time and
energy loss.
