Your Answer:
Name and describe the three types of rocks found on the earth.D Your answer should
be at least one paragraph in length.
The three rock classi`cations are igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The continual
ongoing cycle of rock genesis, rock alteration, and rock reformation is termed the rock cycle.
Rocks are part of a natural recycling system. Igneous rocks are rocks that form from melted
rock, either beneath or on the Earth surface. The stores is melted rock from within the earth.
Igneous rocks that form from cooled solidi`ed lava on the surface are extrusive igneous rocks.
There's no difference between magma and lava except for the location magmas within the earth
and lava on the surface.DExtrusive igneous rocks will have microscopic crystals which are
invisible to the unaided eye. Most igneous rocks are a composite of several minerals. The color
combination of minerals present determines the overall color of the rock. The amphibole,
hornblende rich igneous rocks are ME, FEC, and the quartz and feldspar rich igneous rocks are
felsic. Sedimentary rocks form from eroded rock material, chemical precipitates, or biological
material. Wind and water are the two primary agents of transport and deposition in their
formation. Sand, stream pebbles and mud in a lake bottom are all examples of sediment. The
terms clay, silt, sand, and gravel are used to distinguish the class and size. The resulting rocks
are shale, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate.DHousehold example would be iron stains in a
sync from a leaky faucet or calcium buildup in pipes. DMetamorphic rocks are those that have
changed form when igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks are subjected to
elevated temperature and pressure. Physical and chemical alterations we'll take place resulting
in a metamorphic rock. Metamorphism is classi`ed into the following categories. Contact
metamorphism. This occurs from contact with magma and from heated surface waters. Burial
metamorphism, the weight of the overlying rock causes metamorphism as it steadily increases
with depth. The changes that occur during metamorphism, our number one, smaller crystals will
combine in a recrystallization process that produces larger crystals.DSome common
metamorphic rocks include slate. How the three rock types continually form and change are
part of something called the rock cycle. The story, the rock cycle may begin with any of the
three rock types. Typically, igneous rocks are mentioned. As stated are they are igneous rocks
are rocks that have cooled from liquid rock to become a solid. What's exposed at the surface,
these igneous rocks may be broken down by physical and or chemical weathering. The eroded
rock materials carried by wind, water or ice and redeposited in another location. Glacier, Wind,

Rivers, and waves are all agents capable of moving rock material. If sedimentary or igneous
rocks are exposed to extreme heat or pressure, their chemical or physical state may be altered.
The result is that igneous or sedimentary rocks become metamorphic rocks and the cycle
continues. Sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks sub-ducted beneath a continent will
melt and become a source for new igneous rock.D
