One of the greatest debates of present society is the discussion between the Big
Bang and the six-day creation. The purpose of this comparative essay is aimed to discuss
the difference and even the similarities between the two in this debate. Not only is this
comparative essay aimed to compare and contrast between the old-earth and young-earth
viewpoint, but also to analyze the different views.
First I would to discuss the old-earth topic, otherwise known as the six-day
creation. The story of the six-day creation comes from the book of Genesis in the Bible.
Genesis 1:1 – Genesis 2:3 states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep,
and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,”
and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the
darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was
evening, and there was morning—the first day. And God said, “Let there be a vault
between the waters to separate water from water. So God made the vault and separated
the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. Thus the heavens and
the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the
work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God
blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of
creating that he had done.” Day by day God created the oceans and our lands with the
greens and nutrients that we still see today. Some believe this theory to be a myth; others
believe it to be the explanation to the creation of our world, a question that not everyone
can answer in confidence.

The opposing side of this debate is the big bang or otherwise known as the young-
earth view. The Big Bang is a theory that was first thought of, or recorded from Georges
Lemaites and since then other scientists have expanded and added onto the idea
(Schroeder). The big bang is a thought out scientific theory. This theory is described as
the Universe being incredibly hot and dense thus expanding rapidly (Singh). However,
after the expansion the Universe eventually began to cool, and allow that energy to
convert into a number of other particles, which include the protons, neutrons, and
electrons (Singh). It is said that within minutes after the expansion, atomic nuclei formed.
It is believed that the big bang produced mostly hydrogen, helium, and lithium atoms that
with the combination of these atoms and gravity made the stars and galaxies (Singh).
Despite all of the followers of this theory, because the theory indicates that with the
expansion, the galaxies are also moving further and further apart, which were once much
closer together, making it very difficult to gather information of the characteristics of the
universe at its earliest state. One of the largest downfalls the Big Bang theory has to this
day and what keeps people skeptical is that the Big Bang theory does not offer any
explanation or evidence as to why or how the initial conditions of the universe came to be
(Schroeder). Instead, the Big Bang attempts to begin after that point and explain the
evolution of the universe from that point forward.
When comparing and contrasting these two theories, one big difference is that
with the six-day creation, there is a given creator, whereas with the big bang, there is no
creator, and in theory, just happened by some scientific chance. Another difference is that
with the six-day creation, although some have difficulty putting there beliefs in
something some call mythical, there is a given explanation for it all, and in which the

order it all happened, whereas with big bang, there is no explanation rather the theory
jumps however many of years, then states there is an explanation from then on. Another
huge difference is that the bible states the universe is only about 6,000 years old, where
as the big bang states the universe is close to 37 billion years old (Schroeder). The only
similarity I found between researches and from what I know of both theories is the need
that humans feel to have an explanation to where it all began.
In conclusion, I’m not one to speculate as to what it right and what is wrong, or
more right or more wrong, and I’m certainly not one to tell anyone what to believe or that
what I believe makes more sense than others, but what I can say is that I’ve done a little
research, and displayed it though this comparative essay, you make your own choice.
