Character matters in counseling. While we as counselors and caregivers
are also “fallen ones” and many early researchers in the field of
psychology and the behavioral sciences were unbelievers, nevertheless,
certain truths have still been discovered and God often chooses to bring
healing and restoration through weak and imperfect vessels.
The flow of competent and godly counsel"starts with usand our
understanding that becoming equipped is a process. The Lord typically
builds His people like He did the tabernacle, from the inside out. Our part
is to allow Him free reign to do whatever foundation work or excavation of
the soul that is required. We too need to be formed, conformed and
transformed by the Holy Spirit’s ministry in our lives.
In2 Peter 1:4-11, we see a progression in discipleship and spiritual
formation in how God deepens and widens our capacity to be effective in
our role as counselors:
By Applying All Diligence
Competent Christian counselors have a persevering application to their
pursuits that is steady, earnest, and consistent.
In Our Faith, Supplying Moral Excellence
Competent Christian counselors utilize the Scriptures for their moral
foundation and actively look to integrate biblical concepts.
Then Supplying Knowledge
Competent Christian counselors are willing learners and seek out God’s
truth wherever it may be found.
Then Supplying Self-Control
Competent Christian counselors attempt to assist others in regaining a
sense of control through demonstrating the fruit of the Spirit in their own
lives.
Then Supplying Perseverance
Competent Christian counselors remain committed to the people God
brings them and are willing to work through the resistance.
Then Supplying Godliness
Competent Christian counselors are willing to follow God’s path while
demonstrating God’s character.
Then Supplying Brotherly Kindness
Competent Christian counselors are capable of modeling empathy and
compassion as servant leaders.
Then Supplying Christian Love
Competent Christian counselors endeavor to be covenantal in their work
with others and not contractual.
