EXAM CREATION: INTRODUCTION TO MULTICULTURAL COUNSELING
ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
In this assignment, you will create a 15-question mock exam covering the following chapters in
the Sue, et al. (9th edition) text: 1, 2, 4, 5, and 12. Create 3 multiple-choice questions per chapter.
INSTRUCTIONS
Thus, you will devise 15 multiple-choice questions.
The exam you create will presented like it was the instructor’s copy. That is, each question will
have 5 parts:
1. The question
2. The correct response (clearly highlighted; see below examples)
3. A solutions piece wherein you (1) identify where the response can be found in the
text and (2) provide a short narrative explaining the correct response (see samples
below)
4. Which of our syllabus Measurable Learning Outcomes is addressed in the question?
5. Which Learning Outcomes from Modules 1-3 are addressed in the question?
Here is an example of a multiple-choice question using a fill-in-the-blank format:
The three types of resistance that are often encountered by students studying
diversity training are: _______________, __________________, ________________.
a. cognitive; emotional; behavioral
b. psychological; physiological; emotional
c. dissonance; isolation; invalidation
d. physical; emotional; spiritual
Solution: The authors report that in work with resistance to diversity
training, research reveals how it is likely to be manifested in three forms:
cognitive resistance, emotional resistance, and behavioral resistance. These
types of resistance are discussed on pages 14-18 in Sue, et al. (2022).
This question addresses the following syllabus Measurable Learning Outcomes:

Compare and contrast his/her own cultural background, attitudes, beliefs,
understandings, and acculturative experiences with those of persons from
other cultural groups.
Differentiate how different cultural experiences shape a pastoral care client’s
identity development.
Compare and contrast how different worldview assumptions between
pastoral counselors and their clients influence assessment and pastoral
counseling.
This question addresses the following module-specific Learning Outcomes:
Synthesize theories of racial/cultural identity development, multicultural
counseling theory, and social justice into a coherent personal counseling
perspective.
Critique how culture and worldview assumptions influence clinical
assessment, research strategies, and interpretation of data.
Articulate essential basic multicultural counseling competencies.
Here is an example of a multiple-choice question soliciting knowledge of a concept:
According to the authors of our text, a response to the Black Lives Matter
movement of “all lives matter,” could be construed as a
A. The “high road”
B. Microinvalidation
C. Psychological advantage
D. Needed sociological correction
Solution: Please see Sue, et al. (2022), p.72.
In this example, “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) represents a social justice
movement. Indeed, all lives matter, but as a response to the BLM movement,
the phrase could be construed as an attempt to invalidate an attempt to call
attention to racial injustice. Context is important. BLM is not an effort to
communicate the prominence of one racial/cultural group. It is a
phenomenological social justice movement.
This question addresses the following syllabus Measurable Learning Outcomes:
Analyze multicultural trends as they impact the church and pastoral care
environment.
Compare and contrast his/her own cultural background, attitudes, beliefs,
understandings, and acculturative experiences with those of persons from
other cultural groups.
Differentiate how different cultural experiences shape a pastoral care client’s
identity development.

This question addresses the following module-specific Learning Outcomes:
Analyze multicultural and pluralistic trends, including characteristics and
concerns within and among diverse groups in U.S. and international society
at large.
Synthesize various counselor roles in eliminating biases, prejudices, and
processes of intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination into
a professional practice framework.
Synthesize theories of multicultural counseling, identity development, and
social justice into a coherent personal counseling perspective.
Differentiate individual, couple, family, group, and community strategies for
working with and advocating for diverse populations.
Here is an example of a multiple-choice question using a vignette or scenario:
Juan is a Hispanic male. In counseling, he indicates that he is very nervous about
even being alone with a counselor, as his father strongly believes that any problems
should be handled within the family. This is likely an example of
A. Espiritismo
B. Acculturation
C. Familismo
D. Cultural guilt
Solution: Please see Sue, et al. (2022), pp. 258ff.
According to the authors of our text, Familismo pertains to one’s place in the
family, a source of resilience, and certain definitions of gender roles. In the
context of this question, Juan’s consternation stems from his knowledge or
perception of his place in the family and his father’s decisive role.
This question addresses the following module-specific Learning Outcomes:

concerns within and among diverse groups in U.S. and international society
at large.

social justice into a coherent personal counseling perspective.

Differentiate individual, couple, family, group, and community strategies for
working with and advocating for diverse populations.
Here is an example of a multiple-choice question using scripture to illustrate a textbook concept:
When Jesus met the woman at the well in John chapter 4, His interaction with her
demonstrated what kind of counseling perspective?
A. Etic
B. Emic
C. Culturally universal
D. Stereotypical
Solution: Please see Sue, et al. (2022), pp. 24ff.
Beginning with His purposeful journey through Samaria, Jesus intended to
embrace an Emic perspective in interacting with the Samaritan woman at
the well. That is, Jesus was intentional in being culturally specific in that he
broke with several “universal” cultural conventions (not interacting with
Samaritans, not interacting with women, etc.).
This question addresses the following module-specific Learning Outcomes:
Analyze multicultural and pluralistic trends, including characteristics and
concerns within and among diverse groups in U.S. and international society
at large.
Synthesize theories of multicultural counseling, identity development, and
social justice into a coherent personal counseling perspective.
Differentiate individual, couple, family, group, and community strategies for
working with and advocating for diverse populations.
Please read: Publishers of the Sue, et. al., book provide test pools or test banks. Students
typically do not have access to these, but nonetheless, students may not use these publisher-
provided questions. To do so could be construed as plagiarism. Rather students will devise new
and original questions, based on the book’s content.
