SOLVING MY PEOPLE PUZZLE 3
Solving My People Puzzle
The information introduced speaks to data of my personality type in relation to other
personality types, through an assortment of assessments and data, with an end goal to learn to
become a more resourceful and competent communicator. According to Carbonell (2014), “Since
most of our difficulties in life are usually people problems, understanding why we do what we do
is so important” (p. 8).
Guiding Purpose Statement
We are instructed in 1 Corinthians 11, “...follow my example, as I follow the example of
Christ” (Contemporary English Version). In his book, , Dr. Nichols (2017) states Masterpiece
that, “our purpose in life is to honor Christ and reflect his love, wisdom, and strength to those
around us” (p. 68). Furthermore, the second of two of the most important commands as specified
by Christ in Matthew 22:39, is that we love others as we love ourselves (New International
Version). Many of our life issues are people problems, (Carbonell, 2008). Consequently, in order
to see and treat others like Christ did, and in obedience to his command to love another
effectively, it is imperative that we first love ourselves. We cannot love ourselves however,
without knowing who we are and how we are wired. Hence, my GPS follows such: to become an
imitator of Christ, walking after his model.
DISC Style
I completed a Uniquely You DISC assessment (2018) which conveyed me as possessing
an I/C personality type. I studied the report intently and carefully. I found the report to be
accurate as I recognized all the relative familiars and became more acquainted with my
suggested influences against a variety of factors and circumstances. In the Uniquely You Report
(2018), I am described as active and passive, as well as task and people oriented. Carbonell

(2008) states, “People fit better in life where they are understood and comfortable” (p. 13). The
next step therefore, is to explore how my personality would blend with other personality types.
"D" - active/task-oriented
My “IC” personality type described as active and passive, is well versed in following rules. My
“not dominating or demanding” (Uniquely You Report, 2018, p. 14) type is not very particular
about leading and would work well with a “D” personality type, which is described as task-
oriented, demanding, and loves to take the lead. While I love to follow rules without feeling
intimidated, I would need to be careful not to fall into the trap of self-doubt, described as one of
my “IC” type weaknesses.
"I" - active/people-oriented
The social bee “I” and the passive “I” part of the high “IC” likely find common ground. Since
they are friendly and outgoing, a quality the “IC” admires and honors, as acknowledged in my
closest friend. To blend with her, I often validate her need for social recognition.
"S" - passive/people-oriented
The calm, patient, kind and thoughtful “S” type would be a welcome blend with my sometimes
self-doubting “IC” type who may sometimes need assurance because they “lack drive and
determination” (p. 13) to take advantage of this type because they can be captivated by the
“charming personality” (p. 13) and lose traction by paying the “IC” an audience, which they
often crave (Uniquely You Report, 2018).
"C" - passive/task-oriented
As a high “CI” blending with a “C” should not generate any conflict. However, dealing with a
“C” would feel somewhat familiar as they work best independently, are highly knowledgeable,
are great conversationalists; traits all too familiar to the high “IC” type. It is imperative when
dealing with a “C” as I experience with a close “C” type colleague, to acknowledge and respect
their knowledge and expertise and a subject. The high “IC” can be impatient and because they

know too much, may feel they have no need to be taught anything. Respecting the “C” type’s
expertise and learning from them allows this blend to work.
Connection with Care-seeker
Bruce, lost his wife, Amy and their only daughter, Chelsea, in a car crash. I would
describe Brice as an “S” type. The Uniquely You Report (2018), describes Bruce’s type as,
“sweet, soft, and security-oriented” and not liking “trouble or change” (p. 125). He appeared to
get his fuel to go out and function well for the day from the two women in his life, his wife and
daughter. In the movie, we see him steal home for lunch just to see them and kiss them before
they leave for the mall. All this mellow moods turn into anger when the killer pleads not guilty
and a false report is printed in the press to make it seem like Cindy was negligent. Bruce’s goal is
that he wants justice. He has to clear his wife’s name. The problem he has is the police are
apathetic. This man is hurting and cannot understand why this happened. We are assured in
Isaiah 43:2 that, “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass
through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not
be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze” (New International Version). God will always
provide guidance as we learn in Psalm 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help
in tribulation (Jubilee Bible 2000).
Bruce enlists the help of a “shifty” attorney who helps make headway and prove that the
driver of the car which took the lives of his loved one, was culpable after all because he was a
kid who had everything going for him who decided on a whim to go joyriding. When Bruce
demands to meet with the driver of the car but insists no lawyers be present, things take a
surprise turn that would change lives. He was just a child. In counseling Bruce, it is important to

recognize that the Holy Spirit must be the primary counselor (Kollar, 2011) because there is no
possible amount of book knowledge that could turn any heart around. As counselor and Bruce as
my counselee, we have to be in agreement (Kollar, 2011). Matthew 18:19 tells us that two agree,
they can ask anything of God our Father and he would do it this is further cosigned in Amos 3:3
which states, “Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet” (New International
Version). Using my “IC” type to Bruce’s “S” type would require using warmth and give him time
to process things and respond in his own time and way.
Connection with Mentor
I enlisted the help of three people as mentors, utilizing the 360 Interview Worksheet
(Jantz, 2018), and all three returned with an assessment that my weakness is self-doubt and a
lack of belief in my own abilities. All however, acknowledged that I am very dependable, fair
and honest and interact extremely well with people, placing their needs first. My mentor did
point out that I need to slow down and be patient, a virtue I must work on. Proverbs 14:29 states
clearly, "Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays
folly" In addition, it is evident that this is also a requirement for heavenly qualification because
James 1: 4 instructs us to, “And let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and
entire, lacking nothing” (Geneva Bible).
Conclusion
In life and in my role as counselor, I strive to take on the mind of Christ, seeing myself
and others as Christ viewed himself (Philippians 2: 5, New Living Translation). Christ is the
central focus and the Bible is the complete authority for all reference. This is where my
people/task oriented take hold. To be active, outgoing influencing, inspiring, and impressing

others for Christ. Considering my relational style causes me to find favor with God and man.
Listening well to hear and feel what the other person is trying to say is a necessity for me to work
on. As Petersen (2007) states, “Good listening includes a gentle and accepting
style. It is not harsh or abrasive. You catch and gently hand back what your
talker is saying without animosity, agreeing, or disagreeing” (p. 127).
