Research Problem
The nursing workforce is ageing and there is high demand for health care services due to
the ageing population. There is a significant shortage of nurses in many countries due to the
ageing nurse workforce and increased number of nurses who leave the profession prematurely. A
Study was conducted in 10 American states on the early nurses exit, showed that 14% of the
nurses exit their profession prematurely (Chernomas & Shapiro, 2013; Cheung et al, 2013;
Rathnayake & Ekanayak, 2016; Villanueve, Heale, Rietze, & Carter, 2018). The intention to
leave the profession was highest among the nurses experiencing burnout. A survey done in
Finland found out that 26% of nurses under 30 years have often thought of leaving the profession
(Eriksson et al., 2008).
Pulido-Martos (2011) conducted a systematic review of the quantitative literature to reveal
sources of nursing student stress. They found that the most common source[s] of stress relate to
academics (reviews, workload and problems associated with studying). McNulty, (2018) did a
study on the effects of peer mentoring on the stress levels of nursing students. Findings of this
study indicate peer mentoring may be one way to help nursing students taking their first nursing
course to reduce stress.
Previous studies are dated and explored peer mentorship programs within nursing
education with the focus on the clinical setting and more precisely within medical/surgical units
tied to single nursing courses. The nursing experience of new nurses is significantly different
from that of nursing students in healthcare academic programs. This study will therefore address
this knowledge gap by assessing the influence of peer mentoring on prevention of burnout of
new nurses.
Research Question(s) and Hypotheses
RQ–Quantitative: what is the influence of peer mentoring on the stress levels of nursing
students?
H01—there are no statistically significant differences on peer mentoring and the stress levels of
nursing students.
H1— there are statistically significant differences on peer mentoring and the stress levels of
nursing students.
Research design
The nature of this study will be quantitative research with a cross-sectional research design
consistent with understanding how peer mentoring influence the Burnout of new nurses. A cross-
sectional research design will be conductedBamong all new nurses in the nursing department (58
new nurses) in UC Davis medical center. The questionnaire will be conducted using Google
Forms and a request to participate in the study will be sent to all new nurses.
