Medical terminology is abundantly used widely in the medical field. Understanding medical
terminology can seem a bit difficult, but it’s just a system of words that describe specific
diseases and medical aspects. Having a plan to continue learning medical terminology will be
critically important for me to understand for my future career. Without having a plan to
continue learning the terms, I would be unsuccessful and lost. I also need to know what
exercises I could do to remember the terms for my future and find something that’s fit for me to
help improve the difficult aspects of medical terminology that I need for my success in learning
and career. Joshua 1:9 in
the Bible it says to, “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord
your God is with you wherever you go.
Pursuing medical school later in life after I graduate from Liberty University with a bachelor’s
in health science will be difficult if I don’t understand medical terminology. So, I best be
prepared, make sure I study, and do all I can to master medical terms. I will practice my faith
and lean on God to let him lead the way and keep me strong. When I get overwhelmed and
tired, I can find strength in God. Like in the Bible in Jeremiah 32:17 it says, “Ah, Sovereign Lord,
you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing
is to hard for you.” My plan to continue learning medical terminology will be first of course to
complete my bachelor’s degree here at Liberty University. While I’m in school at Liberty I will
also take a class that will teach me some Latin and Greek words, I’ve heard learning these
languages helps a lot when it comes to learning medical terminology. A firm grasp of medical
terminology is going to be important for my job performance. I think if I would take an extra
class dedicated for strengthening skills of terminology would also be essential. I’ve investigated
a couple of programs that would be appropriate to take in the last year of completing this
degree. There are many programs that teach specifically one area of learning. I also planned to
volunteer at the hospital next spring to learn useful job skills, I’m hoping I will get to learn some
medical terminology while I’m there volunteering. I’ve heard being a volunteer at a hospital is
very rewarding and you can request a job preference. So, when that time comes hopefully, I can
be a volunteer that will help me get acquainted with some medical terms while I’m there. My
plan for continuing medical terminology exists now and has steppingstones for the future of
mastering terminology to the end. My goal is to get my bachelor’s degree, then go to medical
school, then get a doctorate in anesthesiology. My dream job is to become an anesthesiologist. I
know it’s going to take a while to get there, and I know I got a lot of studying to do in the future.
I also know that medical terminology is the key language of my career. This plan that I’ve made
to continue learning medical terminology is something I will need and will play a role in my
success of my career.
To continue learning medical terminology there must be some exercises that I make a habit
of doing to continue mastering the language. I’ve thought of a lot and even researched a few.
There are so many things you can do to learn and remember the terms. You can make
flashcards, play bingo, write them on paper, print them out, make a medical terminology game,
use apps, etc. One of the ways I pick is to make nice fancy flashcards. I’m going to neatly make
each card and laminate each one of them. I’m going to have different colored cards and when
I’m done, I’m going to put them in a nice box. I will gradually add to the bunch as time goes by.
Every time I hear a new term I will add to the box. Every so often I will get my daughter hold the
card up and I will say the definition. I think that will be fun learning for all. Another exercise that
caught my attention that I’m doing now and will continue to do is printing out sheets of paper
to keep in my Liberty notebook of the most common medical terminology words with their
prefixes, suffixes, and roots so I can take out and look over as needed. I like to put all my work
I’ve done in each class in specific binder so in the future if I need a hand, it will be there for me
to look over. One last exercise I can say that is great is the medical terminology learning app.
The app is designed for people who have a career in the medical field and also for others who
want a better understanding of different diseases on their own. The app is great and also fun it
has matching, quizzes, and more. The app says it is used by nurses, physicians, and students. It
really is great on helping me learn and understand the terms. I will be using it in the future to
exercise my mind in medical terminology. With Gods help I will continue to do all these things to
improve my knowledge of medical terminology from here on out and hopefully one day I will
become a master of the terms.
When it comes to medical terminology one thing, I’ve found most difficult is deciphering the
terminology by learning the basic Latin components (suffix, prefix, root). I just started attending
Liberty University in February of this year and it’s been years since I’ve attended school, so I
wasn’t really familiar with suffixes, prefixes, and roots. It took me a while to refresh my mind
but I’m sure I got it now. I still have some trouble, but I got a plan to improve the difficult
aspects of the language that I’m having trouble with. I bought some workbooks to help me
study. The workbooks I have already helped me a lot. They help me understand the word parts,
they let me create my own acronyms, and the books reinforce memorization and learning. I
bought a whole set of 22 books and I’m already on the 9th book. I’ve completed 8 books already
and got 14 to go. I will finish this set to improve my knowledge for success. Also, I’ve thought of
maybe getting a tutor in the future to accelerate my learning with the difficulties so I can excel
in medical terminology. One of the reasons its important to fully understand medical
terminology is that if I want to become an anesthesiologist It is vital for me to communicate to
my colleagues, without understanding it I wouldn’t be able to do my job right. I could give the
wrong medicine to the wrong patient; the patient’s life would be on the line. So, I got to correct
whatever aspect that is difficult to me. I know I mentioned taking a class on Greek and Latin in
my plan for continuing to learn medical terminology but taking that extra class is also a way for
me to decipher prefixes, suffixes, and roots since there made up of the two languages. So last of
all a class to learn Greek and Latin would be a way to help me improve my aspect of difficulty in
terminology. Medical terminology is a little of both Latin and Greek so if I took a class to
understand the two languages, I think it would be perfect for fixing whatever difficulty I’m
having. Combining all these study strategies and letting God give me strength I think will deliver
some great results.
