Good afternoon Felicia,
Thank you for your post on Case Study 6.2, I really enjoyed reading your perspective regarding Dr. Speigel and his
mishandling of the animals under his care. Something you pointed out that I didn’t identify when I was reading the case
study was the amount of time he put into trying to identify Janie’s motives instead of putting that same energy into
resolving the complaints. I definitely agree with you that if he had addressed the complaints he viewed as petty when
they were brought to his attention then he wouldn’t be in this situation of trying to prevent himself from being found out
about the neglect that has been implemented on his behalf. Even with him meeting with the staff to see what Janie is up
to still shows his focus is in the wrong place. I don’t feel he should ever approach Janie about her intent simply because
it’s speculation there is no concrete evidence except her track record of what was reported that she did at other labs in
the past, and without solid evidence I feel Dr. Speigel should focus on his action and not the action of Janie. I personally
felt that the meetings he was having with his staff regarding Janie should have been focused on him apologizing to his
staff for not addressing their concerns and inform them that he would be working to resolve the complaints in order to
ensure the animals care becomes a top priority. If Dr. Speigel would humble himself and admit his wrongdoing and
outline his plan of turning things around I feel his staff would be forgiving and possibly support him when the converse
with Janie if in fact she is undercover. I like the scripture reference you gave of John 8:32 because it reminds us that
being honest will release us of carrying about burdens that were never meant for us to handle.

Case Study 6.1

Good afternoon Nicole,
Thank you for you discussion post on Case Study 6.1 you and I shared the same perspective
confirming a protocol should be submitted even through there is no direct plan of conducting
research with the animals being housed at their clinic facility. In your post you pointed out that
when it pertains to euthanizing animals’ things can go terribly wrong and because of that, I
believe that’s why it’s important make sure that all professional staff that would be working with
the animals have the proper qualifications and training before coming in contact with the
animals. When facility don’t have staff that are properly trained it can increase the risk of things
going wrong with euthanizing of animals. A lot of time more focus is placed on animals bedding,
food, water and sanitation but, what about the protocols that easily overlooked such as ensuring

institutions to vigorously enforce both institutional and state
protections for individuals who come forward with valid concerns regarding research animal

Coffee vs. Alcohol

Good afternoon Brittaney,
Thank you for your post I really enjoy reading your perspective and I love the fact you incorporated your personal
experience of the dent it puts in your pockets; you are definitely not alone in that, I can definitely relate, lol. Your
perspective was well received and relatable because there have been many times, I have met up with friends for coffee
at some of our favorite coffee shops. Those times we meet up for coffee always ended with a positive outcome and
everyone leaving without their state of mind being altered and with a little more pep and energy in our step from the
temporary caffeine surge. Coffee doesn’t alter one’s thinking or actions however on the flip side alcohol can have a very
adverse outcome. You pointed out some facts about alcohol from the reference you listed: Social drinking vs.
problem drinking which are some of the top reason people engage in alcoholic beverages from a social standpoint
which includes lessening the tension and reducing their inhibitions amongst those engaging with each other. Even
though that stance seems harmless I feel it definitely becomes a gateway of things going south very quickly as you also
pointed out as well. Alcohol can alter peoples state of mind and lead someone to becoming belligerent, being perverted,
immoral, delirious or even functioning from a place of insanity.1 God speaks against that in Ephesians 5:18 –

Good afternoon Dominque,
Thank you for your post on Case Study 6.4 on providing your perspective on what dr. Jiao
should do regarding the adversity she is facing with her mentor Dr. Zogby. I agree with
you on your stance that Dr. Jiao should report her mentor’s behavior to the IACUC. You
pointed a perspective I didn’t consider which was the whistleblower protection. I could
definitely understand Dr. Jiao being concerned about coming forth because she could
ruin her reputation before it even gets started however, the Office of Laboratory Animal
Welfare (OLAW) expects
God’s anger take care of it. After all, Scripture says, “I alone have the right to take revenge. I will
pay back, says the Lord.”3 We can’t forget that God is very protective over His children, and we
are reminded in Psalms 105:15 God says, “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no
harm.”3

When we become dependent on something such as drugs, I believe they can
become the “god” someone may start to exalt. In 2 Corinthians 10:5 it says, “Casting down imaginations, and
every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the
obedience of Christ.”2 This scripture is a reminder that drugs that alter the mind and compromise reasoning can
be considered a factor that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.

Difference between Valium, Tobacco, and Marijuana

Good afternoon Brittany,
Thank you for your discussion post on the differences between Valium, Tobacco, and
Marijuana. I like how you discussed the different mechanism action for each substance
outlining the scientific perspective. After reading your post it’s clear we came to the
same conclusion on difference of these substance. All 3 have an effect on our brain and
alters our natural responses. Tobacco can definitely become someone’s inner demon,
that ends up having a stronghold on them because of the nicotine that is the addictive
agent. People that become addicted to tobacco think that it’s a substance that relaxes
them but in reality, their body craves the nicotine making their brain think it needs the
nicotine to function when the truth of the matter is God is all we need. With regards to
Marijuana, I agree with you on the fact that marijuana has been confirmed to be
beneficial to those that have certain health condition and is labeled as medical
marijuana. In my opinion if marijuana is harvested properly and not laced with any
synthetic substance, since it comes from the earth when appropriately administered it
provides several benefits across the health spectrum reduces several symptoms for
those suffering from certain health conditions.1 Valium does have similar effects of
reducing anxiety etc. however, valium is another substance that people can become
dependent on and can cause people to become addicted due to the relaxed high they
feel from this type of drug.

Thank you for your discussion post on Case Study 6.10. Your perspective of outlining how the focus should not
be on whether or not it puts the experiment on hold or cancelling the project all together if that means doing
what is right. The fact that the experiment caused an adverse outcome than what was expected that should be
reported to the IACUC especially because it caused paralysis and death amongst the animals under their care.1
The purpose of the IACUC is to ensure when things go wrong during a research experiment the staff involve
has a guide on how to handle the situation in order to resolve the matter at hand. When we choose to ignore
protocol, it can exacerbate the situation causing consequences that were avoidable had they been addressed
properly. I loved the scripture reference you cited for Proverbs 12:10 it definitely defines God’s views when it
comes to treating animals humanely.

Thank you for your post on Case Study 6.9. I agree with you that the choice that Dr. Featherstone decided to make was
not illegal, but I also found it to be unethical as well. I do feel she did violate the protocol of the IACUC for the institution
she was working for. I feel Dr. Featherstone’s actions was very deceitful and in 1 Peter 2:1 we are reminded to, “Rid
yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander.”1 Dr. Featherstone's approach of being deceitful in
making the IACUC believe she was following their protocols is her cutting corners and going against authority. I’m a firm
believer when we cut corners we end up in a circle and lack direction on which way to go. Her going against authority is
her going against God because all authority comes from God. There is a reason God blocked her research method and
instead of seeking God on which direction to go she took matters into her own hands and puts her in a position that
what she may impede upon her blessings. When we take matters into our own hands it’s equivalent to being arrogant
and lacking a humble heart. In Romans 13:1 we are reminded that, “Every person should obey the government in power.
No government would exist if it hadn’t been established by God. The governments which exist have been put in place by
God.”1
