REINTEGRATION OF AN ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBER
Introduction
The reintegration of military personnel into civilian life represents a complex and
multifaceted process, often marked by unique challenges that demand thoughtful consideration
and targeted interventions. Reintegration is described as the return of service members to their
civilian roles and functions, or participation in everyday life roles (Elnitsky et al., 2017). This
case study delves into the experiences of Jerry, an active National Guard member who
concurrently serves as an Assistant Manager at a local Walmart. Having recently returned from
deployment, Jerry finds himself grappling with the complexities of readjusting to life at home.
This study explores the intricacies of his post-deployment journey, shedding light on the
challenges he encounters and the specific dynamics that shape his reluctance to seek support
from the leadership within the National Guard.
Jerry's dual role as a National Guard member and Assistant Manager at Walmart brings to
the forefront the intersectionality of his professional and military identities, presenting a
distinctive set of hurdles during the reintegration process. Despite being a person of faith, Jerry
confronts difficulty in articulating and addressing the concerns that linger as he strives to
reintegrate into civilian life. Notably, he is resistant to approaching his Guard leadership with
these concerns, a resistance that introduces an additional layer of complexity to the unfolding
narrative.
In recognizing the unique nature of Jerry's situation, this case study focuses on the
importance of tailored interventions and support systems. It also underscores the significance of
acknowledging the influence of personal faith in the resilience-building process. As Jerry turns to
a trusted source—someone trained in military resiliency—for assistance, the study seeks to
unravel the intricacies of his journey and offer insights into the formulation of effective strategies

that holistically address the challenges posed by military reintegration. Through a comprehensive
exploration of Jerry's experiences, this case study aims to contribute valuable insights to the
broader discourse on supporting and enhancing the well-being of military personnel during the
critical phase of reintegration into civilian life.
Exploration
Serving currently as a Navy Command Master Chief, the decision to explore and write a
paper on Jerry's reintegration challenges holds personal significance rooted in my commitment to
understanding and addressing the multifaceted experiences of military personnel transitioning
back to civilian life. Several key reasons underpin the selection of this specific case study, and
why it is important for me personally to address it.
Jerry's dual roles as an active National Guard member and Assistant Manager at Walmart
present a unique intersection of military and civilian identities. This dynamic mirrors the diverse
responsibilities that many service members juggle during the reintegration process, and it is a
dynamic I see quite often. The challenge of transitioning from the structured and very outlined
military life to that of the civilian world is challenging even for those who are doing it once (i.e.
separation or retirement), let alone those who have to go through this transition repeatedly
because they serve the military in some capacity and yet also have civilian jobs. Investigating
Jerry's experiences provides an opportunity to gain insights into the challenges associated with
balancing military obligations and civilian employment.
The challenges Jerry faces in adjusting to life back home following his recent deployment
resonate with the broader issues encountered by service members during the critical phase of
reintegration. Delving into his experiences allows for a nuanced examination of the specific

stressors and psychological hurdles that may hinder a seamless transition from a military to a
civilian environment.
Jerry's identity as a person of faith adds a layer of complexity to his reintegration journey.
Reintegration is a process that is dynamic, personal, multidimensional, and culturally bound
(Elnitsky et al., 2017). Because of this, faith is an important factor to consider in the reintegration
process. Exploring how his religious beliefs intersect with the process of building resilience
contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the factors that influence service
members' coping mechanisms. This aspect aligns with my commitment to recognizing and
respecting the diverse backgrounds and belief systems within the military community.
Jerry's resistance to addressing his concerns with Guard leadership raises important
questions about the role of leadership in fostering open communication and support networks.
Investigating the reasons behind this reluctance sheds light on the challenges leaders may face in
identifying and assisting struggling service members. This aspect aligns with my role as a
Command Master Chief, emphasizing the importance of effective leadership in promoting the
well-being of our military community.
My selection of Jerry's case study is driven by a personal commitment to further my
understanding of the unique challenges faced by military personnel during the reintegration
process after a deployment or separation from the military. By exploring my primary concerns
with Jerry’s situation; the intersectionality of roles, post-deployment difficulties, religious
influences, leadership challenges, and the practical application of resiliency training, I should be
able to contribute valuable insights to the broader discourse on supporting the well-being of our
military community during their transition phase.

Intervention and Support
The reintegration of military personnel into civilian life is an intricate process marked by
a myriad of challenges that necessitate a comprehensive and therapeutic approach. As an active-
duty Navy Command Master Chief, my perspective is informed by years of experience
witnessing the complexities of military life and the subsequent transitions faced by service
members. In my view, a holistic approach recognizes that the reintegration journey encompasses
not only the immediate post-deployment stressors but also the nuanced aspects of returning to the
civilian workforce and the profound need for spiritual support.
In the specific context of Jerry's case, the visible difficulty he encounters in adjusting to
civilian life serves as a poignant example of the multifaceted challenges inherent in the
reintegration process. Post-deployment stress is a palpable aspect, encompassing a range of
emotional, psychological, and relational difficulties that can manifest during the transition. These
stressors may stem from combat experiences, the abrupt shift in routine, and the psychological
toll of adjusting to non-combat environments.
Moreover, Jerry's simultaneous roles as an active National Guard member and Assistant
Manager at Walmart contribute to the intricate nature of his reintegration. The challenge of
navigating the civilian workforce, with its distinct set of expectations and dynamics, adds an
additional layer of complexity to Jerry's journey. This highlights the need for tailored
interventions that address not only the psychological aspects of reintegration but also the
practical challenges of resuming civilian employment.
Furthermore, Jerry's identification as a person of faith introduces a critical dimension to
his reintegration. The spiritual component plays a significant role in the coping mechanisms and
resilience-building strategies adopted by individuals. In recognizing the importance of spiritual

support, interventions should incorporate avenues for Jerry to draw strength from his faith
community, fostering a sense of connection and purpose beyond the military context.
Additionally, faith-based organizations present a valuable choice for seeking support as they
provide both privacy and confidentiality, two essential attributes that can be particularly crucial
when addressing potential stigma (Werber et al., 2015).
The pivotal step in designing effective interventions for Jerry lies in the acknowledgment
of these multifaceted challenges. A nuanced understanding of post-deployment stressors, the
dynamics of civilian employment reintegration, and the role of spirituality allows for the
development of targeted strategies that address the specific needs of the individual. As we delve
into Jerry's experiences, exploring the difficulty of adjusting to civilian life suggests underlying
challenges related to post-deployment stress, reintegration into the workforce, and a need for
spiritual support. Recognizing these challenges is crucial for designing effective interventions,
integrating resiliency-based solutions, integrating biblical support, and overcoming resistance.
When integrating resiliency-based solutions, many options are available to provide Jerry
with support. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is utilized to create techniques to address
negative thought patterns, anxiety, and stress associated with reintegration. CBT is a highly
effective form of therapy that outperforms many other available options when looking at primary
symptom severity after treatment (Tolin, 2010). This evidence-based approach helps individuals
reframe their perceptions and develop coping mechanisms.
If available, employment support programs are another means of utilizing resiliency-
based solutions. Collaborating with Walmart's human resources to create a supportive work
environment, accommodating Jerry's unique needs as a returning veteran. This may involve
flexible scheduling, mentoring programs, and stress management resources. Speaking of

Walmart specifically, they offer a few employee support programs that could be extremely
beneficial to Jerry, one of those being the Merging Vets and Players program (MVP), which
provides veterans with a team of individuals focused on assisting with transition and promoting
personal development (Walmart, n.d.).
Community reintegration programs are programs that provide another avenue of
resiliency-based solutions. Through these programs, Jerry would be provided with
encouragement to participate in local community activities that facilitate connections with other
veterans and civilians. Via the Department of Veterans Affairs, programs such as the Veterans
Employment Resources/Compensated Work Therapy program offer specific Community
Reintegration (COMRE) training geared towards aiding veterans whose integration process
could be hindered due to depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, social isolation, or several other
psychological stressors (Mueller, 2023). This program provides recovery-oriented therapy and
social rehabilitation services that assist in providing veterans with a clear path toward
reintegration. This can help rebuild a sense of community and support for veterans like Jerry.
With Jerry being a person of faith integrating biblical support to assist him through these
challenges would be beneficial and well-received. Pastoral counseling is a great avenue for Jerry
to get support from a faith-based worldview. Facilitating sessions with a pastoral counselor who
understands the unique challenges faced by military personnel, would allow Jerry to find answers
to his questions and challenges from someone who understands his perspective, but can also
clarify things for him with faith in mind. Drawing on biblical principles, these sessions can
provide spiritual guidance and support.
Prayer and meditation without a doubt can serve as a foundation for Jerry to succeed in
his journey of reintegration. Encouraging Jerry to incorporate prayer and meditation into his

daily routine will not only establish some much-needed consistency in his life but also fortify his
reintegration efforts with scripture that can help guide him through the process. Jeremiah 29:11
reads “'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to
harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (New International Version, 2011). These
practices can offer a sense of peace and connection with a higher power, aiding in emotional
healing.
Application
Throughout the course, I have gained a profound understanding of my strengths and areas
for growth as a potential military resiliency counselor or caregiver for military personnel and
their families. One of the key revelations has been an enhanced awareness of my empathetic
nature. I have discovered that my ability to genuinely connect with individuals and comprehend
the unique challenges they face is a formidable asset. This empathy creates a foundation of trust
and open communication, which is essential for fostering resilience among military personnel
and their family members. Recognizing this strength allows me to approach counseling with a
genuine desire to understand and support those navigating the complexities of military life.
In addition to my empathetic nature, the course has underscored the importance of
effective communication skills in the role of a military resiliency counselor or caregiver. I have
learned to convey complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner, ensuring that individuals
can readily comprehend and apply resilience-building strategies. The significance of
communication extends beyond individual sessions to encompass community outreach and
education. Being able to disseminate information effectively equips me to empower military
personnel and their families with the knowledge and tools necessary for navigating the unique
challenges of military life.

understanding, honing my skills in handling complex trauma cases will be imperative in
providing nuanced and sensitive support. Additionally, enhancing my leadership support skills is
vital for navigating the organizational dynamics within the military and advocating for
comprehensive well-being initiatives. Lastly, continuous education is essential to stay abreast of
the evolving field of military resiliency, ensuring that I remain well-informed and equipped to
offer the most relevant and effective support to those under my care. These insights provide a
roadmap for my ongoing professional development, reinforcing my commitment to becoming a
competent and compassionate resource for military personnel and their families.
