Effective project management is a strategic approach to planning and requires control
measures to be in place regardless of the project’s size or complexity. Project managers are
responsible for meeting customers’ desires within a specified budget and timeline. However,
projects are prone to risks throughout their lifecycle, so implementing control measures is
essential. In our case study, the three principles of control underscore key responsibilities for any
project management success: The Buck Stops with the Project Manager, Project Managers Need
Accurate, Timely Information, and Many Eyes Are Better Than Two and Many Brains Better
Than One. These principles are critical, as they can help project managers overcome challenges
and ensure project success. According to Cram et al (2023) “ principles can help to influence the
quality of project management.” Therefore, project managers should adapt their application of
principles to fit the needs of the project as they are at the time. Instead of following a “more
linear, step-by-step project phases, PMs should understand their goals and how they desire to get
there.
As a project manager, it's important to remember the three principles of control: "The
Buck Stops with the Project Manager," "Project Managers Need Accurate, Timely Information,"
and "Many Eyes Are Better Than Two and Many Brains Better Than One." By taking
accountability for the success or failure of a project, staying informed throughout the project
lifecycle, and collaborating with team members, we can ensure that projects run smoothly and
efficiently. This approach helps to build trust among team members and clients and enables us to
deliver exceptional results. In conclusion, by following these three principles of control, we can
overcome challenges and ensure the success of our projects.

at every stage of the project. As Cools (2021) notes, increasing the accuracy of information
enhances the extent to which managers can perform their job. Therefore, it is crucial that project
managers have access to up-to-date data that enables them to assess progress, identify potential
challenges, and make informed decisions promptly. This empowers them to optimize resources
effectively, make necessary adjustments, and keep the project on track to ensure its overall
success. In conclusion, the principle that Project Managers Need Accurate, Timely Information is
a critical aspect that cannot be overlooked in successful project management.
It is important to understand that project managers are not the only ones responsible for
the success of a project. As highlighted by Jaafar et al. (2021), a “team of people work together
under project management.” The project manager cannot be present in all places and must rely
on information from their team. In the case study, we see that Mike lacked critical
communication skills, which resulted in not only the loss of his bonus, but his company also
suffered a loss of around $10,000 on the project. This highlights the importance of proper
communication and tighter control in project management.
The key to successful project management is staying in control. One must have control
over their employees, cost, time, and money. The three principles: The Buck Stops with the
Project Manager, Project Managers Need Accurate, Timely Information, and Many Eyes Are
Better Than Two and Many Brains Better Than One; they are critical, as they can help project
managers overcome challenges and ensure project success. Additionally clear and concise
communication ensures a shared understanding of goals and tasks among team members.
