State and discuss your research question
This paper is the study of how theology and pastoral counseling work together to council
women to love God with all their mind and soul through loving thyself in the image of God. For
a caretaker to help a care seeker, they must help them understand what it means to love thyself
and what it means to love God with all their hearts, mind and soul. The building blocks require
understanding love through an intellectual approach of knowing the heart, mind, and soul. A
caretaker must understand each person is created unique and set apart in the image of God and
they will begin to mature through understanding who they are in the image of God. The outcome
of the caregiver receiving the training can reduce the longevity of the care seeker learning to love
thyself.1
Justify the reason you are using an interdisciplinary approach
According to “The Image of God in Pastoral Counseling,” the study of God has been
developed within the study of psychology. “Faith, theology, and psychology play foundational
roles in pastoral counseling.”2 Each discipline is imperative in the transformation of the care
seekers spiritual, emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. The ultimate goal of an
interdisciplinary approach is to utilize theology, psychology, and counseling to help care seekers
understand who they are in the image of God.3

Theology is a Greek term “theologia” which includes the philosophical and theological
study of God.”4 The study includes a “Scriptural exegesis which is essential to the discipline of
theology and is today usually conducted in a historical-critical key.”5 Moreover, historical
methods such as practical theology, church history, and ethics.6
Apologetics is the defense of the Gospel. It originally began from 1 Peter 3:15 “to make
a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you.” The Apostle
Paul used apologetics in the book of Acts and the Pauline epistles to defend the Gospel.
My second area of study is pastoral counseling. Pastoral counseling can draw far in an
imperfect world full of sinners. Pastoral counselors are trained and equipped to counsel the
whole family unit including singles, children, women, men, and married couples. The purpose of
Christian counseling is to help people transition from a sinful world, identify sin in their lives,
identify any mental illnesses, help transition from divorce, loss, trauma, and grief through
biblical insight and counseling methods. Pastoral counselor’s combine theology with
psychology to address spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical needs.

Theology and counseling share a concern for studying the natural and spiritual world.
Romans 1:19-20 shares “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal
power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,
so that people are without excuse.” All of creation is created by God. The concern is that there is

much unknown about mankind and healing the body of Christ discover their individual purposes
within the body of Christ. An assumption from theology and counseling is that humans are bent
toward sinning. Concepts developed in theology and counseling integrate traditional talk therapy
methodologies. A method used in theology and counseling is Matthew 22:35-40 with a focus of
understanding the greatest commandment of loving your neighbor as yourself. The reference of
self-love is misunderstood and ignored in the context of Christian virtues. Self-love is not
outlined in Scripture, but Genesis one and two shares God created man in His image therefore
we are to love ourselves in the image of God.7

This paper draws from a range of literatures and demonstrates the advantage of
generating interdisciplinary insights. According to “Love God with All Your Mind,” A care
seeker must cultivate a Christian mind to love God and oneself.8
The Image of God
"Then God said, 'Let us make humankind (Adam) in our image, our likeness; and let
them have dominion....' And God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God
created he him; male and female created he them” (Gen 1:26-27). The Hebrew word for Adam
in the book of Genesis “stands for the generic species of humanity which is composed of men
and women.”9 Genesis 5:2-3 says, "When God created humankind, he made him in the likeness

of God. Male and female, he created them, and he blessed them and named them humankind
when they were created." Man, and women were created to reflect both masculine and feminine
traits to become one with God. To understand man in the image of God we must first understand
the image of God.10
1 Corinthians 13 is an example of God’s love. “Love is patient and kind; love does not
envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or
resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). God created our
hearts, minds, and soul in His image to become one with Him. A person will be transformed by
the renewing of their mind when they seek God with all of their hearts, mind, and soul.
The Minds Role in Spiritual Transformation
The mind plays an important role in one’s spiritual journey. In the book of Romans, the
Apostle Paul provides New Testament transformation using Old Testament Wisdom. Romans
12:2 says, “do not be conformed to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind.” Romans 12 is the essence of how we our transformed as Christians to become
more like Christ. In Greek, renewing is anakainosis and the meaning is: making something new.
Mind means “the intellect, reasoning, or the faculty of understanding.”11 Understanding the mind
is the equivalent to wisdom. James L. Crenshaw says, “Wisdom is a particular attitude toward
reality, a worldview…the worldview assumes…the one God embedded truth within reality.”12
The Old Testament assures Christian’s wisdom is the beginning of spiritual transformation. God

created our minds grow in Godly wisdom and understanding. A life of wisdom, knowledge, and
love comes to those with obedience, humility, and love for God. Furthermore, the soul is the
primary role in spiritual transformation, and it is the primary form in forming a strong
relationship with God. Therefore, God desires an intellectual and fundamental change to be
transformed by the renewing of the mind.13
The Minds Role in Transformation
There are five fundamental roles in the transformation of the mind beliefs, behavior, and
character: The mind is made up of three traits which include centrality, strength, and content.14
“The content of a belief helps determine how important the belief is for our character and
behavior.”15 What we believe about the bible, God, religion, politics, history, life after death, and
understanding of the mind…ect, matters; and will shape and contour our thoughts and actions.
There is strength and centrality for a person to believe it. If a belief is only fifty-fifty a person is
mostly likely not going to have a strong belief in it. Instead, a person will decide whether to
adopt a belief based on greater evidence supporting the belief. The more a person is certain
about a belief, it is more likely it will become a part of their belief system, and the more they will
rely on it for action.16 “The centrality of a belief is the degree of importance the belief plays in
your entire set of beliefs, that is, in your worldview.”17 A person’s worldview and lifestyle would
change to live in eternity.

Changing a belief requires changing the belief indirectly. A person can change what they
watch, what they eat, what they read and so on. Furthermore, a person can read certain pieces of
arguments, evidence, and take courses to embark on a new journey of intrapersonal change. God
informs us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds because it is our minds that require
activities to change our beliefs which become a person’s character and behavior.18 A person’s
plausibility structure is a belief they already have. Evangelism and apologetics are imperative to
planting seeds in a person’s mind to create a possible space for a new belief system to develop.
The Soul’s Role in Transformation
To understand the soul’s role in transformation one must first understand the structure of the
soul. The Bible has a deep contrast of how the mind, body, heart, and soul operate. When
properly understood they play an important role in how we think, move, and feel. The mind,
body, heart, heart and soul have a wide variety of meanings throughout the Old Testament and
New Testament. The sole is an important part of the internal structure that is imperative to
understand the mind to develop a better understanding of the soul. The soul has an important
role in being fully present within the body. “For example, if I worry about your soul, my brain
chemistry will change; if I exercise my will to raise my arm in my soul, the arm goes up. If I
experience brain damage, this can cause me to lose the ability to remember things in my soul.”19
The soul contains various mental states which include acts of will, thoughts, desires, feelings,
and beliefs.
First, there are three steps to the minds role in seeing, believing, and feeling which include:

How seeing feeds our minds. “The mind plays an important role in determining what person is
able to see, will, feel, and desire.”20 First, we will discuss seeing. Philosophers distinguish three
types of seeing which include simple seeing, seeing as, and seeking that.
1. Simple seeing is the ability to see what is directly in front of you. For example, if you
see a tree, it is a tree and nothing else. If you see a dog, it is a dog and nothing else.
If you see a cat, it is a cat and nothing else and so on. Even if you were not thinking
about the dog, cat, or tree you can recall it later and remember the color of it. Seeing
is the soul’s faculty of sight.21
2. Seeing as in an act of mental concept. For example, you may see a dog as a dog or a
cat as a cat and believe that if your neighbor has a dog or cat, it is their favorite
animal. The faculty of seeing requires both sight and the mind working together.
Moreover, you may have not saw the dog, cat, or tree the first time you saw it because
your mind was not involved with the process of seeing.22
3. Seeking that is the act of seeing an object and believing what you see is the truth
because of the minds processing system. For example, if you see a tree in your
neighbor’s yard you believe it is one hundred percent true it is your neighbor’s
favorite tree.23
Second, “Simple seeing only involves the faculty of sight. But seeing as involves seeing
with the mind.”24 This allows the mind to know and grow in the process of seeing and believing.
One of the minds roles in the soul is the process of growth and renewing of the mind.

Third, the mind interacts with different parts of the person by providing space to shape
willing, feeling, and desiring. A person cannot grow if they do not know how to grow. The mind
needs intellectual growth in truth for development of the soul.
Developing a Mature Christian Mind
Developing Christian minds requires dying to oneself. Dying to oneself does not develop
a worldly self and not hurried and busy. The worldly self is a danger to the church and society.
Casting out the worldly self to become more like Christ one must follow six steps of activating
self-love in the image of God.25 A person must admit they have a problem with their inner being
and inform a trusted friend, family member, or counselor. All people need to submit to authority
to be truly affective in their spiritual transformation.26 Many people live as Christians with a
secular mindset. A person must change their mindset to have transformation spiritual change.27
One must recognize their routine and change it. For example, what time do you eat breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. What nutritional foods are your eating to help naturally energize yourself. Do
you wake up at the same time every day? Do you work out, read the Bible, and meditate? A
change in a person’s routine can change the chemistry of their mind and soul.28 Love is patient.
One must develop patience and endurance to be transformed by the renewing of the mind and
endurance to win the race. A person must develop a vocabulary. When a person develops their
vocabulary, they expand their brain and develop a Christian mind of growth.29 Furthermore, a

person must set intellectual goals. Setting intellectual goals will allow the mind and the soul to
transform into the image of God.30
Discuss any Conflicts Between Insights or Theories
Understanding the true pervasive God (the "sacred," the "supernatural," the "ultimate") in
psychology and counseling of spirituality prevents the development of psychological
understanding. These three studies intertwined represent unavoidable challenges in spiritual
growth of a person. Psychology, theology, and counseling constitute serious challenges for
social sciences. Psychology and counseling need to be intertwined with theology and
spirituality.31
An article “Positive Mental Health (PMH) for Life in Abundance” is a biological and
evolutionary process and not physical. A person needs to be at peace with their mind, body, and
soul to grow in all components of life. The research method used is the study of John 10:10 "I
came that they may have life and have it abundantly." The research concluded “It is only when
the individual learns to understand oneself, the need for growth, change and development will
arise which is known as a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own
abilities, utilizes the abilities to cope up with the normal stresses of life and work productively,
progressively and fruitfully.” The conflict is psychological determination of what spirituality is,
how it functions, and what is required for ongoing intrapersonal, interpersonal, and spiritual
growth is not consistently practiced in society. In my opinion, psychology, theology, and

counseling will not advance unless it addresses the challenges each discipline faces together and
separately.32
Discuss Common Ground Discovered in Your Research
The common ground I discovered in my research is pastoral counseling and theology
both focus significantly on the mind (psych). It is impossible to become spiritually mature while
remaining emotionally immature. There was a study published in the Indian Journal of Positive
Psychology regarding mental health and spiritual growth. The Purpose of the study is to observe
the mental and spiritual health of college students. Research methods used are “Pearson's Product
Moment Correlation was applied to find out the effect of four dimension of spiritual
intelligence.33 Each person was counseled through emotional, mental, and spiritual challenges in
college. The results of the studied revealed each student who mentally and emotionally matured
through life stressors also spiritually matured.34
A study “Spiritual Maturity and Mental Health: Implications for Counseling” is a study of
spiritual maturity and mental health. The research used are participants “were categorized as
spiritually growth-oriented, transitional, dogmatic, or underdeveloped.” The results of the study
“found that those individuals, compared to the non-traumatized persons, experienced lower
levels of spiritual support and were more symptomatic on mental health measures.” Much
research needs to be established on the various aspects of spiritual and mental health counseling,
considering it is a relatively new area.

This study is limited and may not be generalizable because the respondents were from a
convenience sample and were also predominantly from a Christian background. These results are
also limited because all measures were self-report and were not substantiated by other means.
This study should be considered exploratory. Research conducted in Genia’s typology suggests
that spiritual development and mental health are related. Those who are spiritually immature
report greater psychological distress than those who are spiritually growth oriented. The results
of the study suggest that spiritual and psychological issues are mission elements of
developmental and spiritual growth.35
Suggest Ideas for Future Research Related to Your Topic
Future research related to my topic is the study of neurobiology and DNA. Both have
fundamental roles in mental and spiritual health. A neurobiological of supernatural experiences
is a supernatural experience that impacts the natural by affecting a person's physical and mental
senses. Christians have unique spiritual experiences with God therefore “one could further
propose that as spiritual experiences are by nature ‘experiences’, they are inherently subjective,
and can therefore be classified as personal encounters.”36 Often believers assume that God works
independently through their mind, nervous system, and brain when they are having a spiritual
experience. The purpose of neurobiological study is “spiritual experiences without recognizing
that the mind, brain and nervous system are also central to their manifestation; they are
interdependent.” Neurobiological experiences such as meditation, prayer, and worship cause

feelings and spiritual experiences to arise. “Through spiritual experiences, the brain’s reward
circuits are activated, which help to rewire the brain (neuroplasticity) and cause spiritual
transformation.”37
