LITERATURE REVIEW
Today's cultural approach to religion being infused into education
proves to be a heated topic with views either for or against with no real
middle ground.
Religion has been made into a taboo subject that many educators fear to
even mention in the academic environment. Not addressing the problem
at hand does not simply solve the problem; it in fact create a larger issue.
Silence does not equal resolution. Religion is a highly personal belief and
therefore, should not be forced upon anyone else. This is where the
education system and religion seem to clash. Religion differs person to
person. Depending on who is being interviewed at the time will depend on
the idea of religion that will be presented. “There should be collaboration
and coordination between different sectors of organizations including the
department of education to teach religious authorities, traffic directorates,
and preachers in order to facilitate emphasis on subjects associated with
safe road behavior” (Tabrizi). Every aspect of human life can be attributed
back to religion and its effect on our actions. Language, history, geography,
religion, and race make up culture with varying cultures around the world
the definition of religion will also vary. Religion helps to provide an overall
respect for differing cultures, norms, and values present in the student
body. Culture today is large a melting pot and therefore, there are different
social, economic, psychological, and spiritual factors to consider when view
how our culture affects religion in the academic environment.
Considering the previous cultural aspects of religion, the natural transition
would then be to look at how people use religion. “Religious education is a
human specific
act, consciously pursued by an educator, on the grounds
of some principles and
aided by specific means and methods, being, at the

same time, supported by love, trust, and freedom” (Ene). People use
religion as a guide to their everyday lives and

interactions. Many view religions as a tool for an organized human
society, which can be both positive and negative. This is important to
understand how people interact with religion because when taught in
school personal biases must be considered. Our society has been
religious in nature from the beginning with the first school even being a
monastery. Education and religion have been fused for as long as
schools have been around but in today's culture the push is to remove
religion from education. While ethics don’t have to be rooted in religion the
question
becomes, should they be. Having a distinct understanding of
religions around the
world helps to better understand the world in general.
Culture and religion make
people who they are so understanding these
aspects gives and understanding to
their actions. This point in tie in the
world, understanding of religion should be necessary in schools. Individuals
find their inspirations from, their religions. These
inspirations can either be
positive or negative as well as being in the extremist nature. These
aspects of religion are important to pass onto students because they are
seeing the news and hearing their parents discuss world events. They
are already forming their own ideals on the subject matter so it's best to
impart the
knowledge to them to help them sift through the information
they are taking in.
Diversification among the student body population is a vital aspect
in today's education. Blending education and religion help to include more
students. Children are curious about the world around them, they should
be encouraged to ask questions to help them better understand their
fellow peers. Our educational system is not just white Christian children. It
is filled with many other races and religious beliefs and therefore should be
advanced to better cater to these children without alienating one group.

deeply, and analyze the information carefully. “Scientists have explored
three mechanisms to account for the positive association between religion
and health: 1) positive physiological and emotional responses to religious
activities 2) social support provided to individuals who belong to religious
organizations, and 3) promotion of health-related behavior by religious
institutions and belief systems” (Moore). Diversifying the student body
through religion is a step toward a more inclusive learning environment for
all. Understanding is crucial in education today. If we lose our
understanding of other religions and only see a person with a different
religion from our own then, we lose our ability to comprehend the
motivations behind the actions of other people beyond our system of
beliefs. Studying the varying religions of the world and the traditions that
follow make it clear that different people exist under different religious
assumptions. If educators can help students understand the motivation
behind differing religions, then they will help the student to understand the
action that came from it. Students are aware of the world issues weather
educators choose to believe this or not. The responsibility falls to them to
help impart the tools necessary for students to fully understand the world
around them. The skill of understanding is vital for a successful future; it
should be of highest importance to educators.
Religious literacy plays a vital role in the understanding process of
religion.
The knowledge of one's own religion and the understanding and
openness to other
religions is key in religious literacy. Religious ignorance
is rampant throughout The United 5ates. Acts of violence that people have
been exposed to as well as the daily world news leads people into a sense
of fear of religions that are not their own. This
leads to a vicious cycle of
fear which translates into religious intolerance. This religious intolerance

leads to the eventual perpetuation of religious based hate

crimes. Bullying has become an epidemic in our school systems. Bullying
can take many forms and more now than ever, we are seeing bullying at
the hands of children that are religiously ignorant. “Differing perspectives
of deaf and hearing congregation of evangelical hearing churches presents
an opportunity for more understanding through community conversation
that will foster social inclusion and integration of deaf congregants”
(Schlundt DG). Religion is a first amendment right for those in The United
States. The amendment says that the state cannot interfere with religion
and religion cannot interfere with state. The mix of government and
religion today leads to preventable complications. Society is focused on
not hurting the feelings of or making anyone feel alienated. By trying not
to alienate any student; they have essentially alienated all of them.
Religion is closely related to the moral compass that people possess. “It
was showed
that those who go to church more often are more likely to do
volunteer work as the divine love to help others” (Baloch). A better
understanding of one's own religion as
well as others that exist help to
deepen the respect one can possess. Furthering the development of a
more comprehensive moral compass. The sharp lack of religion in
schools
is linked to a declining morality of society. Aristotle said it well, “Moral virtue
comes from habit...the habits we form from childhood make no small
difference but rather they make all the difference.” Religion plays a
fundamental role in the human development. Exposing students to religion
early is crucial in developing them into successful well-rounded adults.
Religion can be viewed as a guide and structure for life. Peoples religion
influences everything from a person's choice of clothing to the life choices
they come to make. The key to blending education and religion is the
unbiased delivery of the teaching. If religion is taught with personal bias,

then the
students views on religion will also be skewed.
