The areas I chose to study in my undergraduate journey have prepared me for a lifetime of
not only identifying problems within society, but also creating feasible solutions. However, it was
not a straight path to learning and identifying these areas of study. I began learning and studying
with an intent of earning a political science degree. While studing this subject and simultaneously
working in the political arena, I learned that political theory and other aspects of the degree I was
earining were often times not applicable to the arena I was working in and often times only
theoretically applicable. Comign to the conclusion that I wanted to learn and study a subject that
was more applicable to my future career, I began to study both business and government. Below I
will explain why both of these areas of study are intertwined and compliment each other to better
individuals for careers in both the public and private sectors.
Studying government could be seen as daunting for many individuals in our country,
however, I believe more individuals need to study this area to better understand our society.
Understanding how government was created, how government operates, how government has
changed, and what the interworkings are for various aspects of this daunting word is extremely
vital to the future of our society and nation. Trends have shifted downwards for individuals with an
understanding in government, even a majority of high schoolers not beign able to pass the test
given to individuals becoming US citizens. Therefore, with an extensive knowledge of
government, a lifelong career in many arenas will be successful. All career paths and occupations
are touched by government, most individuals not understanding this fact. Because of this, a deep
understanding of government is essential to being successful. In my studies, I have been able to
study and understand local, state, and federal governments while simaltaenously working in either
a state or the federal government. Knowledge of how to learn the process for legislation that is
created that effects every citizen is vital for anyone purusing a career in the United States. For
INDS 400
example, a businessman is affected by legislation that raises taxes on small businesses, Doctors are
affected by legislation that limnits their scope of practice, attorneys are affected by TORT reform
law that is iniaited. Being able to understand not only the legislative process but also how to
influence the legislative process is key to being successful in any career, but is vital to the career
that I would like to pursue, one being either in business or the political arena. Because of my
studies in government, especially in a public administration course I previously took, I have the
tools to help me to be successful working in all levels of state and federal governments, especially
in positions analyzing and researching legislation because of what this course taught me.
With a deep understanding of government because of my coursework, I wanted to also gain
an understanding of sociology. Just as government influences everyday life, so does sociology.
Sociology has helped me to understand how individuals operate and what specific aspects of life
influence how individuals think and act. On a broad level, sociology is important to understand any
single person. Therefore, all individuals could benefit from studying sociology to better equip
themselves to understand others as well as to help understand themselves. Sociology also helped
me to gain a deep understanding of how to be an effective leader and an effective worker, as I
learned in a sociological leadership class I previously took. Because of the materials I learned
about different styles of leadership and how these styles affect employees in vastly different ways,
I am able to identify a situation and understand how to best approach the stiaution for the best and
most efficient outcomes.
Above I delved into the two areas of study I have become familiar with during my
undergraduate coursework. Both of these areas of study have deepend my knowledge and helped
me to understand how to be most successful in the career path I have chosen. While studying these
subjects, I have worked in two state governments, a state political party, and a national political

organization. Without my understanding of these sujects, I would not have been as successful or
been able to apply myself to these positions. I am grateful that I studied the subjects of
Government and Sociology as I do not think any other combination of subjects would have better
prepared me for any type of political career path I choose to pursue in the future.
