g I enjoyed reading your discussion post. I thought you provided an in-depth
interpretation of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s sermon excerpt and D. L. Moody’s sermon
excerpt. I read about D. L. Moody and discussed his life in the initial discussion post.
The love of “God was D. L. Moody’s fundamental theme of his evangelistic preaching; it
was the central theme of his life.”[1] He believed in the core attribute of the Godhead is
love and that it should dominate the church.”[2] I enjoyed how you strategically identified
Wayne McDill’s four persuasive elements in Moody’s sermon excerpt.[3] McDill posits
that writers “on expository preaching have for generations emphasized the use of four
rhetorical elements to persuade the hearer of Bible truths, explanation, illustration,
argumentation and application.”[4] McDill also discusses the significance of “aiming for
impact (your aim for the material you are preparing for your sermon).”[5] For example,
your aim with “explanation is to present the ideas as clearly as possible, your aim with
illustration is to present the ideas vividly, your aim with argumentation is to present the
ideas a credible and your aim with application is to present the ideas as practical.”[6] I
shared in another discussion post the significance of aiming for a faith response. McDill
suggests that preachers should “look closely at every sermon you preach to see whether
it is designed to evoke faith in the hearer; and to look at your own intention in delivering
the message for that same goal.”[7].
