B H Carroll was a classic Trinitarian in the Baptist tradition, where he
embraced the New Hampshire Confession. However, he did not embrace a
Calvinist soteriology, but taught that a person is saved once they hear the
gospel, repent, and believe. His method for preaching was that his

sermons had to be saturated with scripture. Carroll founded Southwestern
Seminary. The school he started has educated tens of thousands of
preachers and pastors. His understanding of the preaching task as rooted
in biblical authority has defined that institution’s ethos throughout its
history. Carroll’s methodology acts as a bridge between the textual
preaching more common in his own era and the expository preaching
presently advocated.). Carroll’s sermons took their lead from a singular
text but then he looked elsewhere in the text for development. This
