Introduction Attention
Anyone watched the news recently? Some of you might even try and stay away from the news
in fear of the depressing realities of our world… some current disasters are: the
Israel/Gaza/Palestine Conflict, 25 confirmed weather disasters in the US this year, rising crime
rates and illegal drugs in the US this year, among countless other disasters going on in our
lives, our country, and the world.
Need
But I’m assuming that none of you have had any personal, family, financial, emotional, or
work related issues in your lives this year right (sarcasm: likely that ALL have). And I feel
sure that none of you have been affected by all of the things going on in the world…

Sermon Idea: The Proper Perspective Keeps the Church on Task and Target
Interrogative: If we are the church, what is the proper perspective?
Transition: This scripture in Philippians 1 suggests four ways to how the proper perspective

and your mind.
DIVISION 1 STATEMENT: God reveals himself to and through believers.
Explanation: Verse 13. The Palace Guard knows of God’s character as a result of a
believer's life and actions. Paul is a direct representation of the Gospel in the lives of those
at the Palace Guard.
Illustration:
How likely is a baby to learn to use a fork and spoon to eat off of if I (as their mom) only
eat with my hands? In the same way, God uses those who believe in Him to show others
who he is.
Argumentation
If Paul spent his time at the Palace Guard sulking, mad, frustrated, (likely how the usual
prisoners there would act), would he be perceived as having something good to offer the
others there?
Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewal of your
mind (Rom 12:2).
We have been given God’s thoughts and his mind through the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 2:6)
Application
What would it look like if our thoughts were transformed by Christ, have an eternal
