Identify Adequacies and Deficiencies
Based on my Actual Intakes-vs-Recommended Intakes Report:
Nutrient Actual Rec.
Calories 1,374.56 1,635.91
Carbohydrates (g) 165.44 224.94
Sugar (g) 75.92
Dietary Fiber (g) 7.79 22.90
Soluble Fiber (g) 0.27
InSoluble Fiber (g) 1.16
My actual daily AMDR: 1374.56 (kcals) x .45 = 618.552 (kcals) 1374.56 (kcals) x .65 =
893.464 (kcals)
DRI’S: 618.552/4 kcals/g. = 154.638 893.464/4 kcals/g. = 223.366 *The minimum of
130 grams of carbohydrate is met daily.
Health Effects of Carbohydrate
1. My sugar intake was too high, which can cause weight issues and dental caries 1 p141.
2. My actual fiber intake was 7.79%, which is lower than the recommended amount. I am
getting less than the AI for dietary fiber, on average. 1 p135 Low fiber intake can increase
my chances of developing health problems, such as, heart disease, certain cancers and
diabetes. 1 p134

Suggestions to Improve Carbohydrate Intake
According to the single nutrient report, I meet the daily minimum (130 g) amount of
carbohydrates needed for brain function, but most of the carbohydrates are not from good
sources. Not all carbohydrates are created equal. 1 p135 Whole foods, such as grains, fruits,
vegetables etc., are good sources of carbohydrates as well as fiber. 1 p 135
A great source of fiber listed on my single nutrient report, but was minimal, was salad, nuts
and fruit, in which I need to incorporate more of.
1. I will add apples to my diet for breakfast and lunch 5 days a week to increase fiber.
2. For dinner I will eat brown rice instead of white and beans at least twice a week.
3. Eating more green leafy vegetables at least 4-5 days a week for lunch or dinner.
4. I will add whole grain cereal, such as raisin bran, to my breakfast at least 3-4 days a
week.
Sport drinks, iced tea and sweet potato casserole was a high source of sugar on my list. Most
of my sugar intake, as listed on my single nutrient report, was from sports drink, desert, and
sodas.
5. To reduce my sugar intake I will drink water, with lemon to add flavor, on a daily basis
and decrease my sports drink and soda intake.
I decrease my intake of processed foods and eat less fast foods for lunch/dinner by
making my own from fresh ingredients.
6. I will snack more on vegetables and fruit, which has natural sugars, instead of snacks
such as ice cream and cakes.
