Water And Sanitation Standards In Humanitarian Action
2
Human rights and the freedom to access water and sanitation are inextricably
linked.International legal accords acknowledge this right, which guarantees the availability of
adequate, acceptable, usable, geographically reachable, and reasonably priced water and
sanitation services for domestic and individual use (Ersel, 2015). Indicators of survivability in
the early stages of a disaster include access to water and sanitary conditions. People who have
been through a crisis are often more susceptible to disease and disease-related death, which are
mostly caused by inadequate water supplies, poor sanitation, and the incapacity to practice
appropriate sanitation. A sufficient amount of clean water is necessary to meet personal
household sanitary requirements, prevent dryness, lower the risk of water-related illness, and
meet drinking and cooking demands.
WASH (Water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion) stategies are designed to
provide safe intake water, decrease ecological wellbeing hazards, and create environments that
enable individuals to live a better, healthier, and more meaningful life (Ersel, 2015). Their
primary objective in disaster situations is to decrease the spread of faeco-oral illnesses and
disclosure to illnesses containing vectors. Additionally, the WASH program attempts to
encourage greater personal and ecological cleanliness to safeguard health, promote good health,
and make means more available.
An effective WASH program relies on data distribution among the association and the
calamity-affected individuals in order to recognize serious cleanliness issues and socially
sensitive solutions. Hygiene education is necessary for a WASH strategy to be successful (Ersel,
2015). One of the fundamental tenets of improved sanitation is teaching society to rinse their
hands after handling feces, after washing a kid's buttocks, and before eating and making food. In
contrast, the safety and health of people impacted by disasters depend largely on the quality of
3
the water. Water should be of adequate amout to utilize for hygiene purposes, cooking,
and drinking. Furthermore, proper feces removal is the first line of defense against
illnesses caused by feces.
It should be taken care of with the same urgency and attention as securing a reliable
supply of water because it is a top priority in the majority of disasters. Additionally, poor
solid
waste removal might put the impacted population at risk for public health issues; for this
reason,
solid discarded removal should be performed in proper cooperation and communication with
the
impacted community (Ersel, 2015). Lastly, surface water that collects can jeopardize
public
health by polluting clean water sources, producing pests, wrecking homes and toilets, and
even
creating fatalities. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a suitable sewage system to keep
the
living areas dry.
In conclusion, the importance of water for human survival is paramount. It is critical to
provide adequate water supply to people affected by disasters and during humanitarian
relief
efforts. To protect the populace from outbreaks and diseases, sanitation and hygiene
requirements
should be included as soon as is practical in a society's daily routines.
