Anatomy is the study of the structure of the body and the physical relationships between its
constituent parts. Physiology is the study of how the human body systems work, and the
ways in which their integrated activities maintain life and health of the individual. (Waugh &
Grant, 2018) Both anatomy and physiology study different aspects of biology, together they
will provide a better picture of what the body is and how it functions. (Anatomy &
Physiology, 2022) It is important for medical office personnel to understand the basics of
anatomy and physiology when managing insurance claims. A physician will use a lot of
medical lingos in their handwritten or verbal notes, so when you’re tasked with transcribing
these notes it’s imperative you have a basic understanding. If you do not it can lead to
mistakes in insurance claims which will result in a claim denial. Medical office personnel
are the frontline for communication through patients to their physician/and or nurse. Even
though you may not give out any medical advice, you can use your clinical expertise to
handle any given situation. When you have a basic understanding of anatomy and
physiology, it makes handling patient complaints much easier too. It also allows relaying
any messages to a physician to be as efficient as possible. If a patient where to call their
physician and wanted to report worrisome symptoms, they expect even office personnel to
have a knowledgeable, and reassuring response. For example, during flu season, you will
have to be able to screen callers for symptoms so that you do not have a sick and
uninfected patient in the waiting area at the same time. As medical office administrators
it’s our goal to keep a physician’s office busy because it generates revenue, so knowing the
matter of urgency helps filling time slots in a suitable manor. Another benefit of having the
basic understanding of anatomy and physiology as a medical office administrator is if at
anytime you might want to advance your career such as to become a nurse. When you work
in a health care facility you are expected to learn a certain language, and to be able to do so
you will need an understanding of how the human body works.

Hi Contrena!
I understand completely where you’re coming from, and how out of practice I am from a
school type setting. Many things have changed over the last 20 years, so hopefully it’s like
riding a bike. One good thing and hopefully it will be a benefit, is all the advancement in
technology. Where people lack of having youth on their side, can make up with the
experience gained in life, which will help along this journey. So, when you mentioned being
able to answer patients when they ask a question if you were to add life experiences on top
of learning the basics of anatomy & physiology, you’ll really be ready. They say
communication skills have been described as the most important ability for a health
professional. Also, I agree with the example of being able to take better care of patients.
