Contrast the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic systems.D Include their effects on the eyes,
airway, heart rate, blood sugar levels, and digestive system.
The sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are two branches of the autonomic nervous system that
work in opposition of each other to maintain homeostasis in the body.
Effects on the eyes
-Sympathetic: Dilates pupils, improves vision in low light.
-Parasympathetic: Constricts pupils, blurs vision for near objects.
Effects on Airway:
-Sympathetic: Relaxes bronchioles, increases air _ow
-Parasympathetic: Constricts bronchioles, decreases air _ow
Effects on heart rate :
-Sympathetic: increase his heart rate and contractility
-Parasympathetic: decrease his heart rate and contractility
Effects on blood sugar levels:
-Sympathetic: increases blood glucose levels by stimulating release of glucose from liver
-Para sympathetic: decreases blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin release
overall the sympathetic system prepares the body for “Pght or _ight” responses, while the parasympathetic
system is responsible for “rest and digest” responses.
