Summary
There is a variety of models used by professional counselors within the counseling
experience that stand for the foundation of counseling. Entwistle's models are composed of
enemies, spies, colonialists, rebuilders, neutral parties, and allies (2015). Theology focuses
scripture as the primary source of information along with an evaluating history, archeology,
philosophy, while psychology uses disciplines, reason, and observation to gather information.
Enemies model defines antagonistic models which believe that theology and psychology
are mutually exclusive while having no common theme. These beliefs originated during the
phase of enlightenment in this era was mainly focused on the premises of reasoning being the
main source of knowledge. These reasonings work is a governing force in the belief system for
this model has proved to be reliable. The enemy's perspective separates theology and psychology
it makes it apparent that they have no similarities. Within this enemy model, there is a distinction
between secular combatants who have a negative view on religion and Christian combatants who
see psychology as the enemy (Entwistle,2015).
Despise model contains psychological content inevitability and it's broken up into foreign
spies and domestic spies. When discussing foreign spies, we must remember that they seek to
find religious connections found in psychology wow domestic spies tend to water down religion
to seek the psychological benefits. Clinicians use this model to find embedded psychological
content in religious places. The important factor is that their theological findings are changed
when they study psychology behind certain events (Entwistle,2015).
Psychology is viewed by some as a helpful tool when studying aspects of scripture.
individuals do this by not placing a heavy emphasis on blending the two together but in fact

highlighting aspects of psychology that can be integrated into theology. There are Christians that
take parts of different belief systems and merge them together to form their own basis of belief
and faith. Entwistle describes these Christians as accepting, rejecting, or modifying their findings
based on their assumptions and religious beliefs (Entwistle, 2015). There is not a full grasp of
psychological findings within these individuals in their view of psychology with presumption of
religion tends to alter their interpretation of psychological findings.
Rebuilders believe that humans have twisted and changed psychology from what God has
created it to be. These individuals adhere to the belief that Christianity the psychological in
nature and it is found throughout all the aspects of the Bible. however, these rebuilders do
respect psychology, and they also recognize the benefits that it brings to the counseling field.
rebuild her see the need for soul care and seek to integrate that aspect into their lives with the
intention of becoming more like Christ (Entwistle, 2015).
In Neutral parties there's an agreement that is sought between psychology and theology.
in this model there is respect given by both psychology and theology for their findings and
respect is given by each of them on how these findings compare to each other. This model shows
the importance of both in allows for each to have respect in their findings. this model believes
that psychology and theology are completely independent from each other (Entwistle, 2015).
In Allies both theology and psychology work together to provide insights and new
findings while staying subject to God's sovereignty with respect of his deity. in this model
psychology and theology or integrated so that they might discover their underlying unity. This
model also concentrates on the importance of humans seeing their purpose in honoring God and
keeping his precepts. They recognize that both psychology and theology differ in disciplines,
methodologies, findings, and own sources (Entwistle, 2015).

Within the Christian community, there are many Christians who make up these model
categories, and plenty of whose view represents a mix of some. The difficult part is that there's
not a transparent and distinct view that Scripture has. There are struggles with theology and
psychology therein there are always new findings. again and again in history when new findings
are discovered, certain thoughts to be truths from the past are thrown out and therefore the new
viewpoint takes over. sure as shooting topics within psychology and theology, there's a
transparent and concise depiction of the actions to be taken as a result of the findings. Some
findings of psychology and theology are uncertain, which is where personal interpretation comes
into play.
The problem with personal interpretation is that every individual approached topics with
their own previous assumptions, beliefs, and experiences. These factors contribute to the final
word findings each individual comes up with, leading to various positions and thoughts within
the broad topic and within the narrow topics of psychology and theology.
The model which most closely fits me is the last one, allies. I think that there are many
benefits that include psychology and theology, and one is used without the opposite, and so on.
The reason why I particularly like this model is thanks to the character of my Christianity and
my love for psychological findings.

Counseling and theology combined together is a complex and intriguing combination of
both spirit and intelligence. there are both positive and negative factors when dealing with
interrogating theology and psychology. Remembering the unwavering respect and sovereignty of

the living God is the most important aspect when speaking and thinking of this integration. if we
keep our focus on God's sovereignty, we are then able to rightly interpret psychology and
theology in a positive way that honors God.
In my current field of counseling, I hope and pray to correctly integrate psychology and
theology into my counseling. what are the examples that I can think of is when I had a client that
was at the end of her rope both spiritually and physically not to mention her mental stasis was at
the brink of disaster. The client that I was dealing with was able to rely on her belief system to
maneuver through the decision making That she needed to Do within the psychological Distress
she was experiencing. This was an amazing journey to me because I realized that psychology and
theology could work together to not only find a solution for the issue but to also complement
each other in the aspect of recovery and redemption. This aspect is something that I would love
to concentrate on during my Graduate School because I feel that it is a very powerful and solid
theory that can be a catalyst for a new and improved way of counseling.
When I think of integrating psychology and theology together, I remember the words that
I've read over and over. The scripture that comes to mind his second Timothy 3:16 which states,
“all scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and
for training in righteousness”. I am a firm believer that the context of this scription can be
defined and perceived in multiple ways but when we take this scripture and diagnose the issue of
integrating psychology and theology together, we see that God's precepts stand firm and true.
psychology is away for an individual that's suffering define the truth in their suffering. even
though our moral code has been compromised due to the fall of man we still stand firm in the
truth of the word of God.
