HISTORY OF TERRORISM ASSIGNMENT
Introduction
“Our Nation’s cause has always been larger than our Nation’s defense. We fight, as we
always fight, for a just peace – a peace that favors liberty. We will defend the peace against the
threats from terrorists and tyrants. We will preserve peace by building good relations among the
great powers. And we will extend the peace by encouraging free and open societies on every
continent” – President George W. Bush. Terrorism is the real impact which the U.S government
has to face to protect the nation from domestic and international attacks. Moreover, it threatens
the human rights which are the foundations of the U.S Constitution including right to life, liberty,
and integrity. Historical, there were a lot of terrorism attacks to the U.S that it challenges the U.S
government has to improve their policies and technologies in order to protect America from both
domestic and international attacks. The mission of the Department of Homeland Security is to
identify the threat of attack and eliminate vulnerability from nation security. Their mission will
get harder due to different kinds of terrorisms including cyber-attacks, nuclear weapons, and
bioterrorism. Even though the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2002 to protect
America from disasters and terrorism attacks, all government agencies have to work together to
update their systems to make the nation safer. Therefore, the political identified the term of
terrorism throughout history and ensured having a plan to respond and prevent the incidents
happening. In this assignment, there are the history of terrorism in the U.S and the missions of
the Department of Homeland Security in order to protect America from terrorism attacks.
History of Terrorism
Terrorist violence is a fact that government have to face in the past. For instance, there
was a bomb attacking in 1917 by anarchists that it killed nine police office in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. In addition, there was a series of bombings which attacked Washington D.C in 1919

as well as destroyed J.P Morgan & Company in 1920. As result, a lot of people were killed
including citizen and officers. Thus, the term “terrorism” was first described in 1790 referring
used during the French Revolution. Definitions, terrorism is an impact which threatened the
nation’s security as well as violated human rights. According to the U.s Constitutions, all people
have rights to life, liberty, and freedom that they are protected by the law enforcement system.
All activities violated human rights considering terrorism. Also, the attack on September 11,
2001, was not the first terrorism attack in the U.S. In 1886, Haymarket Square in Chicago was
bombing attack which caused death of seven police officers and four civilians. In 1910, the
offices of the Los Angeles Times were explored and fired that there was 21 people died, and the
investigation revealed more than 100 bombings across the country.
Especially, the major terrorism attack in the U.S history occurred on September 11, 2001
that it was a cause of over 2,977 death and destroyed both towers at the World Trade Center in
New York as well as Washington D.C. As result, the Department of Homeland Security was
created in purpose protecting and responding quickly the terrorism attacks. It was decided by
President George W. Bush who had responsibility to protect and fight against the terrorism
extremist groups. He stated, “The attack took place on America soil, but it was an attack on the
heart and soul of the civilized world. And the world has come together to fight a new and
different war, the first, and we hope the only one, of the 21st century. A war against all those who
seek to export terror, and a war against those governments that support or shelter them”.
However, the terrorism attacks are still happening that it challenges the U.S government to
protect American people from terrorism groups such as Taliban, Al Qaeda, and Islamic
Extremist. For instance, Dahir Adan who are from Iran drove the car into groups of students at
the University of North Carolina in 2016. Also, the bioterrorism which attacked the U.S was

COVID-19. This pandemic occurred in the U.S during 2019-2021 that it caused of over 1 million
American people death. Also, the pandemic destroyed the U.S economy including shortage of
food, medicine, and unemployment. Therefore, terrorism attacks are more and more growing up
in different way that the U.S Government has to improvement their systems to achieve their
missions including defending the nation’s security, fighting against the attacks, and protecting
American safety. “We have to be right a billion-plus times a year, meaning we have to make
literally hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of decisions every year, or every day, and the
terrorists only have to be right once” (Stevenson and Johnston 2004).
The challenges
The President Bush created the Department of Homeland Security in the purpose of
protection America as well as elimination the threats of attacks. Moreover, this department has
more missions including mitigating, planning, responding, and recovering the incidents.
Moreover, the threats of cybersecurity and immigration are the facts in the 21st century that
government has to consider for mitigating and reducing the terrorism attacks. President Trump
said, “This would be accomplishment by using cybersecurity to protect space systems, increasing
security on space assets, and creating a more robust system for space-related communication”
(Trump Administration 2020). Focusing on cybersecurity training gives them an opportunity to
serve better in public as well as reporting the threat of attacks. All agencies have relative to
identify and eliminate the impact of cybersecurity attacks and report to the president to alarm the
violation. Therefore, cybersecurity workforce has to improve and get trained for all government
employees that they can serve their community and assist federal into secure the nation. “If we
are going to be connected, then we need to be protected. As Americans, we should not have to
forfeit our basic privacy when we go online to do our business” – President Barrack Obama.

Moreover, another impact which threatens America safety is the immigration policies.
Most of terrorism are from another country, and they move into the U.S in difference purpose.
For instance, the terrorism attacks on September 11, 2001, was from the Islamist extreme group
Al Qaeda which 19 terrorists were identified. Most of them came to the U.S and led by Osama
Bin Laden to advance his extremist goals which are bombing and mass murders American. As
result of terrorism attacks, nearly 3,000 people were died from 93 different countries. Therefore,
illegal immigration is a majority challenge for the Department of Homeland Security in order to
protect America and reduce the threat of security. Furthermore, immigrants are also a cause of
increasing the discrimination which violates the community safety. The government is trying to
improve the immigration policies that America can grant more potential skilled immigrants as
well as mitigating the criminal illegal immigrants who threatens America safety. Therefore, the
Congress should work on the immigration law system to achieve their missions including to
protect the nation security and prevent terrorism attacks from extremist groups. “Immigration
policy should be generous; it should be fair; it should be flexible. With such a policy we can turn
to the world, and to our own past, with clean hands and a clear conscience” – President John F.
Kennedy.
Conclusion
In conclusion, terrorism attacks are real impacts that the U.S Government needs to improve
their systems in order to eliminate the potential threat of security and prevent terrorism attacks
from both international and domestic terrorists. Protecting America and making America great
again are the missions of the Political today. Their goals get more difficult due to the
improvement of technologies such as social media, cyber-internet, and artificial intelligence. The
challenge of law enforcement agencies is how to eliminate the risk of cybersecurity and manage

the threat of security that they can protect America from terrorism attacks. Moreover, building
plans to response and recovery is also important to fight against the terrorism attacks. “We face a
united, determined enemy. America is going to be prepared” – President George W. Bush. The
government should work on a plan which prepares for America not only fighting against the
enemy but also reducing the damage from incidents. All federal agencies, Department of
Homeland Security, Department of Commerce, Department of Justice, and so on, should work
together to build a better security system that they can identify and prevent the terrorism attacks
at the beginning to mitigate the damage about human life and properties. “We put the world’s
financial institutions on notice: if you do business with terrorists, if you support them or sponsor
them, you will not do business with the United States of America” – President Geroge W. Bush.
According to the Christian viewpoints, God always protect human in His way regardless
race, gender, or ethnicity. “The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The
LORD will keep you going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore” –
Psalm 121: 7-8. Therefore, government should protect their citizen as well as their country
following God’s words. All their actions should reflect the Bible to make America safety due to
terrorism attacks increasing. “But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for
joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you” –
Psalm 5:11. Therefore, the federal government, especially the Department of Homeland Security,
has their priority mission which is reducing the vulnerability of the nation’s security, protecting
American from attacks, and eliminating the potential threats from extremist groups. “No weapon
that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against
you in judgement. This is the heritage of the servant of the LORD and their vindication from me,
declares the LORD” – Isaiah 54:17.
