The American military has been involved in several wars and minor military actions, which
have resulted in the deaths of numerous Americans. However, America has become increasingly
deadly on the battlefield over time because of its better fighting methods and technical
developments. This has demonstrated that American forces are among the bloodiest in the world.
One element unites all seven of the conflicts this study discusses: advances. Now, this is not
limited to discussions about technological developments. As a nation, we have developed during
the many years of battle, growing both more lethal and more cohesive.
With an average duration of eight months, the Spanish-American War was very brief. Like
this, just a few decades earlier, America was still getting over the previous Civil War. For the
United States, though, this was a different type of conflict. The conflict during the Spanish-
American War had two fronts separated by an ocean. As is well known, President William
McKinley was doing his hardest to keep America from going to war with Spain at the time since
we weren't ready for any form of conflict. To safeguard American nationals, the President
dispatched the USS Maine to Cuba in January of 1898. A massive explosion that rocked the USS
Maine on February 15, 1898, claimed 266 American lives. On board are sailors. War was
declared only a few months after this catastrophe, and this is when the advances in technology
began to show themselves.
