Today, the pervasive use of technology is not only a critical aspect of modern life but also
continuously evolving. This evolution has significant implications for various parts of society,
particularly concerning the transformation of terrorism. It is essential to define terrorism, as
"definitions are usually complex and controversial; because of the inherent ferocity and
violence of terrorism, the term has developed an intense stigma in popular usage"
(Jenkins ,2018). While both terrorism and technology continue to advance, the core definition
of terrorism remains unchanged. However, as technological advancements occur, terrorist
organizations increasingly exploit these innovations to refine and enhance their strategies.
One of the most widely used tools at their disposal is social media, which allows
terrorists to communicate and coordinate their activities with individuals around the globe in
real time. “Terrorists use these platforms with the apparent intention of inspiring and inciting
people to commit violence, and a snowball effect is already visible: recent perpetrators of right-
wing-inspired mass shootings have openly referred to each other as inspirations” (van der Veer,
2019). This ease of connection presents unique challenges not only for law enforcement
agencies but also for parents of young children, as individuals are not even safe in their own
homes. The rapid dissemination of extremist propaganda and the mobilization of potential
recruits are significant concerns.
Drones are another tool that terrorists misuse for various purposes, primarily for
surveillance and as weapons. This creates risks for everyone, as "the strategic and tactical
advantage of drone technology cannot be underestimated, especially as the threat landscape
continues to evolve" (Basit, 2024). While terrorists utilize drones, the military also deploys
them during counterterrorism operations. There is a continuous effort to improve these drones
to enhance their effectiveness, which reduces the risk to personnel by allowing for the use of
drones instead of pilots when necessary.
As technology evolves, so does our banking system. Most people can now access their
accounts via phones, laptops, and other devices connected through the internet, which can be
easily hacked. Terrorist attacks pose serious threats to people's property and lives, leading to
violent fluctuations in financial markets (Song et al., 2023). When discussing finances, it's
important to consider the role of cryptocurrency, a relatively new financial instrument. Bitcoin,
as a prominent form of cryptocurrency, has the potential to be used for funding terrorist
activities. “Owing to the decentralization and anonymity features of cryptocurrencies, illegal
transactions cannot be regulated. Bitcoin is often associated with criminal activities, including
money laundering and the financing of terrorism” (Carmona, 2015; Majumder et al., 2019).
Moreover, the rise of cyber terrorism has prompted a critical reassessment of cybersecurity
practices. With the increase in cyberattacks targeting both individuals and organizations, many
people are now more aware of their vulnerability to online threats. This heightened awareness
has led to a growing emphasis on implementing robust cybersecurity measures, ensuring that
personal data and critical infrastructure are better protected against malicious actors. BAs
technology continues to evolve, so do the methods employed by terrorists, forcing society to
grapple with new security challenges while reinforcing the importance of cybersecurity in an
increasingly interconnected world.
In conclusion, the ever-evolving landscape of technology presents both opportunities and
significant challenges in the realm of terrorism. As terrorists adapt their strategies to exploit
advancements in communication, surveillance, and financial systems, society must remain
vigilant. The integration of social media, drone technology, and cryptocurrency into their
operations underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and robust
cybersecurity practices. It is imperative for law enforcement, policymakers, and individuals to
work collaboratively to address these emerging threats. By fostering a heightened awareness of
the risks and investing in technological safeguards, we can better protect ourselves and our
communities from the multifaceted dangers posed by modern terrorism in an increasingly
interconnected world.
