As you begin to explore information related to your research subject, keep in mind that a
wide variety of resources may be pertinent. These may include general information about your
subject, historical background, quantitative and/or qualitative data (problem-specific or public
opinion data), state and/or federal government actions (laws, executive orders or administrative
rules, court decisions), interest group positions, and scholarly research (scientific, legal).
A good place to begin your research is in the university library. The links given below will

A search for existing studies, data, opinions and background related to your chosen public
policy issue will lead to a variety of source types. While valuable insights and information can be
gleaned from a diverse set of sources, it is important to recognize all of these sources for what
they are and the audiences they are intended to reach—and to use them appropriately.
The following table is based on a resource developed by the Meriam Library, University of
California at Chico (adapted by permission, July 2014). It is not an exhaustive listing of sources
related to politics and public policy, as it does not include television, radio and film sources,
public documents or other relevant data. Please pay careful attention to the purpose of each type
of publication and its targeted audience.
