Critical Review
The article, Globalisation of missions: An exegesis on the Great Commission, written by
Mookgo S. Kgatle, takes on a historical style declaring that Jesus Christ has ultimate authority on
heaven and earth. The article discusses the Great Commission in which Jesus Christ commanded
all of his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. Jesus Christ wanted the disciple to
baptize the people in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and teach them to
observe all things that Jesus has commanded them, which is a call to global mission (Matt 28:16-
20). Matthew 28:18 states, “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on
earth has been given to me.” The article later explains that Jesus assured the disciples that he would
always be with them and guaranteed them a worldwide victory. The article analyzes the Great
Commission to understand further the type of authority Jesus Christ is referring to in the scripture
and why it was important for him to command his disciplines to obey his authority. I appreciate
how the article explores the meaning of the teachings that Jesus Christ has already commanded.
Although it is implied that the word of God must be spread throughout the world, the fact that it
was a command by Jesus Christ means that the Gospel is a requirement for all nations to achieve
Christian living.
Analysis
The article focuses on the Great Commission, allowing the reader to analyze Jesus Christ’s
authority over the disciples. Through analysis, one will notice the hesitation of the eleven disciples
preparing to embark on their journey to spread the gospel. Jesus Christ noticed this hesitation, and
Jesus Christ assured the disciples of his sovereignty over heaven and earth.1 Jesus Christ was
exhausted by the disciples due to his authority, which gave them the confidence to trust that their
lives would be in good hands.

Jesus Christ's command to spread the gospel to all nations created animosity among the
Jewish Religious leaders. Jesus Christ’s command resulted in converting the Gentiles and Jews,
which created much tension with the synagogue, where Jews attempted to maintain their
exclusiveness within a community that Hellenism overcame.2
While analyzing this article, one will also notice that Jesus Christ wanted the disciples to
teach the new disciples to keep what Jesus commanded. Jesus Christ was known as the teacher up
until that point and now he has given his disciples the authority to spread the word of God which
provided different lessons than what was provided in the Torah.3
Suggestions
I suggest that anyone who reads this article must already have an understanding of the
Great Commission. The Great Commission is the catalyst to doing God's work; without that
understanding, it would become difficult to overcome the obstacles one will face when spreading
the Gospel. I also suggest that those interested in spreading the word of God should start in their
local communities before embarking on the global mission. Starting in the local community will
give you the experience to influence people to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
