1. Describe at least 3 thoughts or feelings you had during this activity and what circumstances precipitated
each.
a. I was confused when we walked in and were being yelled at in a different language.
b. I was curious to what languages were being spoken and tried to figure out what each was.
c. I was thought about how if this was how the class was taught every day.
2. What forms of non-verbal communication did you see utilized in your group during the activity?
a. I saw hand signals being used.
b. I saw gestures to things instead of using words.
c. I saw others being quiet, so I became quiet as well.
d. When she motioned for others to stand for the playing of a countries national anthem, I stood up
to show respect.
e. I saw that the body language of others was more respectful towards the teacher.
3. What forms of non-verbal communication did YOU utilize during the activity?
a. I utilized the form of hand gestures and used them when I tried to communicate to the teacher’s
aids.
b. I utilized the form of eye movement and gave eye contact when necessary and showed my
expression through my eyebrows.
c. I looked around to others to see what they were doing to try and mimic their actions because I
wasn’t really sure what was happening.
d. When I was done writing notes, I put my pencil down out of respect.
4. What did you learn about communication through this activity? (100-150 words)
I learned that communication is easily communicated through other means. However, I realized that it is
also hard to pick up what is being communicated towards you sometimes. Nonverbal communication is
used much more than verbal communication, and we need to know how to properly know how to read
and communicate nonverbally. I realized that not all cultures in this world will be like our own and it is
extremely selfish if we believe that to be true. I realized that if we need to properly understand other
cultures, we need to first know what we are communicating and communicate nonverbally to be the
most effective that we can. (109 words)

5. What did you learn about yourself and the way you respond to communication challenges through this
activity? (100-150 words)
I learned through this activity about nonverbal communication that I am not very good at it. I realized
that I need to work on how I respond to nonverbal communication and what I am communicating
towards other people that I am interacting with. I also realized that my understanding of cultures and my
CQ knowledge needs some work. I realized that I am very curious about other cultures, but I also do not
have a proper understanding of many cultures and their nonverbal communication. Through this activity,
I learned that I must rely on others around me to help my overall understanding of cultures to help better
myself for the future. (111 words)
