In Genesis 12:1, Abraham is commanded by God to "Go to the land I will show you".
A physical location is noticeably absent. What does this suggest about the purpose of
God leading Abraham to a new land? Is there a principle to be found in Abraham's
willingness to obey without foreknowledge of where he was going? Have you ever
experienced this in your own life? If so, answer this in the final paragraph of your
response.
In Genesis 12:1 we see the very beginning of the Abrahamic Covenant. God tells
Abraham to leave everything he has ever known and travel to a foreign land that he
knows nothing about, not even where it is located. I would imagine that Abraham was at
least somewhat apprehensive, I become fearful of just the thought of being asked by
God to do something much less intimidating than this. Abraham shows unconditional
obedience, complete surrender to God here. Abraham's faith is so evident in his
immediate compliance with God's instruction. Genesis 12:1-2 continue with God's
promise of the blessings to come. Abraham fully believed and trusted God in these and
all things, which is something I strive for today. I'm directed to Hebrews 11 in which the
author writes of the great faith exercised by the Patriarchs of the Old Testament. Each
one displaying great faith and receiving great blessings.
I believe that is the greatest thing we can do for God is to believe and trust him in
all things. Unfortunately, I occasionally think that I can do it better or I know more about
my circumstances than He. Jeremiah 29:11 is what I like to call my life verse. Primarily
because I need to be reminded often that God's plans for me are so much better than
anything I could ever imagine. My desire is to live a life in complete faith, trusting God in
every situation. It is my personal experience that when I live according to God's will and
not my own there is nothing to fear, however, fear easily creeps in at times.
In 2013 my husband had received a cash bonus from his employer. At the time we
were residing in New Jersey, where we had both been living our entire lives. My
husband is an identical twin and it was at this time he and his wife had first suggested a
possible move out of New Jersey. We were drowning in debt and the stress on all of us
was overwhelming. Shortly after we both purchased adjoining properties in Virginia. At
the time we knew God had led us to purchase the property but we couldn't see a way
that making the move financially would ever come to fruition. In January of 2016 my
husband's employer underwent a reconstruction of management and his position was
eliminated. Talk about complete panic!! However, the plans our Heavenly Father had for
us were beyond anything we could have ever imagined. My husband was given a
severance package that allowed us to purchase a mobile home for our property and
move our family to Virginia completely debt free. The move has been wonderful for all of
us in ways we hadn't even expected. If how God, and it was all Him, worked each detail
out for us was not enough, my in-laws were able to make the move on the exact same
day! When I reflect on the events of the past few years I can't help but to be in awe. In
closing I can only confirm my life verse, Jeremiah 29:11.
Abram was told by God to leave his country, his relatives, and his father house , and go
to a land he knew anything about ,He would show him when he got to the place, The
land was a physical place because the Lord express to Abram that He had
borough him out of Ur of the Chaldean to give him this land to possess. The promise
was made to Abraham, then confirmed to his son Isaac, then to Isaac's son
Jacob. Abraham's grandson. The Promise Land was described in terms of the territory
from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates river. The purpose the Lord not telling Abraham
where the land was and Abraham willingness to obey without foreknowledge of where
he was going was to test Faith that Abraham had in God. For " (Roman 4:3) the
Scriptures tell us that" Abraham believed the Lord and it was credited to him as
righteousness", In the Good News Translation it said" Abram put his trust in the Lord
and because of this the Lord was please with him and accepted him". " Is this blessing
only on the circumcises, or also on the uncircumcised? We have been saying that
Abraham's faith was credited as righteousness." Yes I have had God tell me to do
something but I didn't past the test, I herd him tell me to go lay hands on a friend of
mine for her healing, but fear kept me from doing it,, as of today I keep wondering if I
had obeyed the Lord ,where would I be today? But then I think God knew what I would
do in the beginning, I have asked for forgiveness for that and I know He has. I never
had God to tell me to leave a place and go some where else.
Genesis 12-1 Speaks about Abraham's obediences to God. God tells Abraham to leave
his Country, his family, friends and basically what's familiar to him. This was his life ,
this is all he knew. Can you imagine how he may been feeling and all the emotions and
questions he may have had?
There are times when God will speak to you and it just don't make sense at all. It's then
when we have to depend on God and activate our faith in him. God knew the plans he
had for Abraham and for his family even when it didn't make sense, it made sense in the
end. We have to learn to trust God when it don't feel good . Jeremiah 29:11 States For I
know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil,
to give you an expected end. So we must trust God and lean not unto our own
understanding. Proverb 3:5.
Abraham was raised in a Pagan Culture that worshiped the moon gods
and goodess ( Wilmington pg 15 ) God knew that staying in UR wouldn't be good for his
family and his spiritual growth. So basically God was saying Abraham in order to grow you
have to Go and he left no instructions. That is like God. He will tell us something and you
are like okay God is this you? Sometimes we have to be willing to move out of what's
comfortable to us, what's familiar and what's known to lean on God and activate the Faith
that's in us to grow and obtain the blessing he has for us.Hebrews 11-1 states NOW faith is
the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things NOT seen.We have to move NOW
and this is what Abraham displayed.
In closing yes Abraham trusted God, he believed God but he was also human and
experienced fear and uncertainly like most of us would have. I believe God used Abraham to
show us how to move and operate in Faith. Me personally I don't believe I would have
honestly have gotten up and left my place of comfort with no instructions. SO Abraham felt
the same, this is why he obeyed God but partially . God told him to leave his Country , leave
his family and go to a place I will tell you. Abraham took his Father and Nephew to a city
known as Heran. Although God has not instructed me to leave a place physically I can
remember him telling to pray for a young lady on Elevator and because I was operating in
fear and lacking faith in God I did not do it. God has strengthen my Faith and I now can be
obedient to God's voice and his will for my life.
As we read the Bible, we see that in Genesis 12:1 it tells us about the beginning of the
Covenant and how Abraham is obedient to what God tells him to do which is leave his country
and everything that he loved and knew and to go to a place that he has no idea of where it is or
how it will be there. I would have been scared out of my mind, but Abraham had such a strong
faith that he just went along with what God told him to do. Abraham believed and had faith in
God’s promise of the blessings he was going to receive in his obedience, and it was confirmed as
well to Issacs which is the son, and Jacob the grandson of Abraham.
The promise land was said to be a place located Egypt by the River Euphrates. The
reason God did not tell him where he was going or where it was to measure Abrahams faith
(Romans 4:3). In our human minds we can not understand or comprehend the complexity of
God’s will but if we follow Abrahams example and listen to God so that he leads us in
everything we do then we would have less heartache and problems in our lives. God wants us to
trust him for our benefit not because he wants to punish us. It doesn’t matter if it makes no sense
to us, we just have to have faith and God will take care of the rest. We all have the bad habit of
wanting to take over and have control of the situation even though we know that we do not have
the power to change anything. The final results will come out perfect if we just leave everything
in God’s hands and not be fearful.

When God tells us, we have to do something it can be an overwhelming experience. We doubt
ourselves and rethink everything such as, Did God really say that? Did I hear him wrong? Do I
just want to do it my way? There are so many questions that we ask ourselves. I know it must
have been scary because when you are all settled, and you have your life in a certain place with
all the comforts of home you do not want to leave everything behind and start over. I believe it
happens to us in a similar way not that God tells us but if anyone has experienced a divorce you
have to make a decision as to what to do and I was so comfortable but when I was in that
situation I had to decide what I was going to do for the rest of my life so I decided to move to
Florida and I left everything and I started over . I was scared but I trusted in God. I guess that is
what Abraham was feeling at that time. We just have to learn to trust God and listen to Him!
God test every one of us in different ways. He created us and he knows every detail about us our
strengths and weaknesses. My faith has been tested many times and I am what you call a
chicken or a scaredy-cat. I have been in situations that are sine tingling all because I did not
listen, and when we don’t listen, we have to pay the piper because that is what God wanted to
avoid. I did listen one time when I was younger. My best friend in high school wanted to take
me to a card reader. I told her that I did not want to go because that dabbles in the occult and I
am a child of God and he doesn’t like that. Time passed and one day she told me we were going
to one of her other friends house. We lived in New York, so we hopped on the train and we went
to her friend’s house. When we were about to walk up the stairs, I got a bad feeling. I told my
friend but she did not want to listen but when I started walking further up the steps of the stoop I
felt it a little stronger and I just started weeping. I scared my friend so bad that she told me lets
go home. Once I was calmed down, she asked me why I was crying, and I explained that I had
an overwhelming feeling that it was a bad idea to go into that building. She told me that she was
trying to trick me and take me to the card reader that she wanted me to go to and that I did not
want to go. That seed grew in my friend and she is a believer today.
