Braun-Trocchio, R., Graybeal, A. J., Kreutzer, A., Warfield, E., Renteria, J., Harrison, K.,
Williams, A., Moss, K., & Shah, M. (2022). Recovery Strategies in Endurance
Athletes.8Journal of functional morphology and kinesiology,87(1), 22.
https://doi.org/10.3390/jfmk7010022
The article by Braun et al. (2022) discusses the importance of implementing proper
recovery strategies to ensure that athletes are at their peak for performance. Recovery
does not just include physical elements but also includes physiological, psychological,
emotional, social, and behavioral elements. This article examines each of those aspects,
specifically for endurance athletes, and notes the importance of matching recovery
strategies to the demands of the sport. Although this article is specific to endurance
athletes, highlights how recovery methods can be affected especially when considering
the specific demands of the sport.
Cunha, L. A., Costa, J. A., Marques, E. A., Brito, J., Lastella, M., & Figueiredo, P. (2023). The
Impact of Sleep Interventions on Athletic Performance: A Systematic Review.8Sports
medicine - open,89(1), 58. https://doi.org/10.1186/s40798-023-00599-z
Cunha et al. (2023) suggest in their article that a lack of adequate sleep can have a
negative effect on athletes’ performance and recovery. The study suggested a few sleep
interventions such as the following: napping, maintaining sleep hygiene, going to sleep
earlier, manipulating lights, getting off electronic devices during the night, taking ice
baths or cold showers, and being mindful. The authors suggested that these interventions
may help but not all of them are guaranteed to promote better sleep.

Doherty, R., Madigan, S. M., Nevill, A., Warrington, G., & Ellis, J. G. (2021). The Sleep and
Recovery Practices of Athletes.8Nutrients,813(4), 1330.
https://doi.org/10.3390/nu13041330
The article by Doherty et al. (2020) highlights the importance of recovery for athletes
post performance, as athletes are often put under significant mental and physical stress.
This article provides evidence found within a sample of elite athletes that elite athletes
require more quality sleep than the average individual and that proper sleep can improve
performance (Doherty et al., 2020). The study found high levels of fatigue, stress, and
pain found amongst both groups of athletes, which proves the need for proper recovery
methods specific to the athletes’ sport.
Vitale, K. C., Owens, R., Hopkins, S. R., & Malhotra, A. (2019). Sleep Hygiene for Optimizing
Recovery in Athletes: Review and Recommendations.8International journal of sports
medicine,840(8), 535–543. https://doi.org/10.1055/a-0905-3103
Vitale et al. (2019) asserts in their article that sleep deprivation can negatively affect
performance. The article states that sleep deprivation can affect reaction time, accuracy,
vigor, submaximal strength, and endurance, which are all important components of being
an athlete. Furthermore, the authors suggest that sleep deprivation can also affect
cognitive functions. Each of these aspects can be cited as to why quality sleep is
important specifically for athletes. The authors suggest athletes fix the problem rather
than resorting to sleep supplements.

Walsh, N. P., Halson, S. L., Sargent, C., Roach, G. D., Nédélec, M., Gupta, L., Leeder, J.,
Fullagar, H. H., Coutts, A. J., Edwards, B. J., Pullinger, S. A., Robertson, C. M.,
Burniston, J. G., Lastella, M., Le Meur, Y., Hausswirth, C., Bender, A. M., Grandner, M.
A., & Samuels, C. H. (2020). Sleep and the athlete: Narrative review and 2021 expert
consensus recommendations. British Journal of Sports Medicine, 55(7), 356–368.
https://doi.org/10.1136/bjsports-2020-102025
The article by Walsh et al. (2020) examines the need for sleep for athletes as many of
them do not get enough sleep to support the needs of their sports. The article does not that
there is not a “one size fits all” answer to specifically how many hours a night athletes
should get. The authors suggested that a sleep schedule should be individualized to the
needs of the athlete as everyone is different. The study utilized a variety of methods to
track sleep such as a polysomnography, activity monitoring, smartphone applications,
and sleep diaries/questionnaires.
