ARTICLE REVIEW: BASKETBALL INJURY REHABILITATION
Introduction
This review is on the article Evaluation of a Shoulder Injury Prevention Program in
Wheelchair Basketball Journal of sport rehabilitation by Wilroy and Hibberd published in the in
2018. It was chosen for review because it explores an approach to preventing shoulder injury
among wheelchair athletes hence a basketball rehabilitation strategy. The article focuses on
shoulder impingement – an upper body-related injury that causes bursitis and rotator cuff tears,
among other complications. This article is crucial because it examines one of the significant
challenges facing wheelchair basketball athletes, who experience high demand on their shoulders
as they propel the wheelchair on the court. Therefore, this article’s intervention program is a
significant step toward addressing shoulder injury by reducing its likelihood. Additionally,
basketball is among the most popular sports globally, especially in the US (Andreoli et al.,
2018). However, despite all the gains emanating from sports participation, including enhanced
body composition, physical well-being, and increased strength, sports with high physical
demands like basketball, involving repetitive jumps, may increase injury risk to participants
(Andreoli et al., 2018). Thus, Wilroy and Hibberd (2018) contribute to risk reduction by offering
an intervention strategy for shoulder injury risk minimization. This strategy can improve sports
benefits, especially among wheelchair athletes.
