Needs Analysis
A. Metabolic Aspects Of Sport
Before a training program can be designed and implemented, a formal needs
analysis must be conducted. A needs analysis is performed by the strength and
conditioning professional to determine how an athlete might be best served by
programmed training. It aims to identify the demands of the sport itself, as well as the
specific needs of the individual athlete. In other words, a needs analysis comprises a
major part of the initial planning and preparation (in addition to athlete testing and
measurement, see Chapter 10) that is then used to inform and guide program design.
Because adaptations are specific to the type of training performed, careful consideration
must be given to the needs analysis it is in effect, the foundation for an effective
training program that prepares a given athlete for competition.
What does a needs analysis address? A needs analysis will typically address the
metabolic and biomechanical requirements of the sport itself, and any unique
requirements dictated by specific positions within that sport. Furthermore, a needs
analysis may also seek to identify potential injuries encountered by an athlete, for the
purpose of designing a training program that minimizes the risk of that injury.
In essence, the needs analysis aims to address the following major questions: 1)
What are the metabolic (energy) requirements for an athlete based on their sport and
position? 2) What are the biomechanical requirements demanded of an athlete during
competition? 3) What are common injuries associated with an athletes sport? By
addressing these questions, the strength and conditioning professional is able to make
informed decisions with respect to the acute program variables (i.e., exercise selection,
order, load, sets, and repetitions) that comprise the day-to-day elements of a training
program. Specifically, the training program can be designed to produce adaptations that
at a minimum, meet the metabolic and biomechanical requirements for an individual
athletes sport and position (i.e., specificity of training).
As described in Chapter 1, there are three major energy-producing systems or
pathways: 1) phosphocreatine, 2) glycolytic, and 3) oxidative. These systems consist of
enzyme-driven biochemical reactions of varying complexity that yield adenosine
triphosphate (ATP). ATP is frequently referred to as a high-energy molecule because
cleavage of the terminal phosphate bonds yield energy. The energy released is then used
to power cellular events such as muscular contraction, and hence, movement and physical
performance.
The three energy systems differ in both their rate of ATP provision, as well as
